Current Report
Spent 12 days camped in
Katmai. 4 days camped 2
miles from Contact Creek.
Caught Kings, Chums,
Sockeyes, Grayling, Rainbows
and THOUSANDS of big char.
Lots of bears.
Spent 4 days camped about a
mile from the Little Ku'. We
caught numbers of big
rainbows almost all on BIG
mouse patterns. Killed a few
sockeyes for supper each
night. Lots of bears and we
got chased a couple of times.
Spent 4 days camped at
Brooks. The best dry fly
fishing imaginable. We lost
count of the 20 - 26 inch
rainbows we caught on #18 -
#12 dark mayflies. A few
bears. Our best trip to
Alaska yet. Hard work, sore
muscles and there is no way
to get a good nights sleep on
tundra. But worth every sore
muscle. What a place. Tip:
Keep you options open when
going to Katmai. There are
lots of rivers and they heat
up and cool down. If you're
going to a lodge, no
problem. But if your camping
on your own, get there and go
where your taxi service
reccommends. We used Van at
Branch River Air in King
Salmon and he certainly
steered us right. The last
days at Brooks we choose
because we like to finish up
there and this year was
fantastic. Feel free to e-
mail me if you want some
advice on going cheap and
camping in Katmai. Not for
the faint of heart, but Wow
what an adventure it always
is.
