Current Report
By Pablo "Polo" Rossi Guide of Mendoza Fly Shop Maybe I have to say that this was one of the best entertaining fishing trips that we made, because we shared some spectacular days with John and Jay, two American Airlines pilots from Sacramento California, very funny fellows and very dedicated to fly fishing in a very special way, because they told all the time to use dry flies, and you know, of course, that implicates a great challenge for every fisherman but at the same time is the most enjoyable way for fly fishing, because you can see the rise of the trout and also make some speculations about the size or if it is a rainbow or a brown, well you know the passion that means fly fishing. So we had an amazing week with a lot of trout fighting in our lines and with so many fishing tales that we will remember here in Argentina and in the world sky thanks to John and jay and all those moments in the waters of the Chimehuin and the moonlight in the Spring Creek lodge… February 22nd – 2004 Today we fished the Chimehuin river on the Spring creek area, it was just the afternoon but it was really good, in just a few hours, the river let us know the quality of these beautiful waters. The place: Chimehuin river on the Spring creek area. The fishing: It was really good, always using dry flies that gave to us great results over the week and in that special afternoon a great Brown trout took the fly in the last minutes of light. The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines. The flies: little ephemeras worked very well, the elk hair caddis and the Royal Wulff. The weather: spectacular with very few clouds and the wind didn’t show up so it was very easy to work the flies in beautiful afternoon. February 23rd – 2004 Today we went to the Alumine river with the rafts, in the joint between Alumine and Malleo rivers until Rinconada bridge, in one of the hottest days of the season, but with and exceptional fishing mostly using dry flies on the big mirrors of water that, because of the time of the season that we are in, you can find big and very slow pools where the trout rise very gently to different hatches during the day. The place: In the joint between Alumine and Malleo rivers until Rinconada bridge. The fishing: It was amazing in the end of the day because of the intense heat that kept the trout in the bottom of the riffles but after 18hs they started to rise very confident to the Massartellopsis that were hatching all over the river. The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines and for the deep riffles 2 or 3 fast shooting lines. The flies: The Dr. Lecter worked very well in the hottest part of the day but in the afternoon we used Massarta sub-imago and Adams Parachute. The weather: Really hot with no wind so it was a very hard day until the shadows started to cover the shore in the end of the day. February 24th – 2004 Today we fished on the Malleo river, on the monster pool and in the end of the day we went to the riffle behind the mapuche school, it was a great day of fishing without wind and very few clouds that aloud us to spend a beautiful afternoon. The place: the Malleo river, on the monster pool. The fishing: in the morning was very good, with the trout rising to the little Baetis that were hatching in every slow water on the river and the trout moved around the willows looking for them. When the cast was correctly placed under the willows the beautiful rainbows took the fly almost instantly and in the afternoon in the school riffle a massive hatch of big caddis gave us an excellent end with a lot of trout in the last minutes of the day. The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines The flies: imitations of little Baetis and some attractors as the Royal Wulff in the morning and in the afternoon the Adams Parachute and big Elk Hair Caddis. The weather: it was very nice with slow wind and a beautiful sky that aloud us to see clearly the Lanin volcano that is a great sight for the fishermen. February 25th – 2004 Today we went to the Chimehuin river with the rafts, from the town to the Manzano pool. This is a day that could be called “a perfect day of fishing”. The activity last all over the day, because the trout rise to every dry fly that we placed near the willows, giving us great fights with long runs and jumps. The place: the Chimehuin river from the town to the Manzano pool. The fishing: It was excellent, it began very early in the morning when the trout rise to the little Baetis, and we got hits with any imitation in the correct size and it only stopped when we had to prepare lunch. In the afternoon was the same, a lot of strikes and trout fighting in the end of the lines and the most important thing was the weight of the trout that averaged 2 pounds and some over that… The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines The flies: The Royal Wulff worked very well and the imitations of Massartellopsis sub-imago although they took the Adams with a lot of confident. By the end of the day the big Chilloporters appeared to make the perfect day of fishing. The weather: Sunny with an excellent temperature, the only thing that we had to be worried about was to place the flies in the right spot to look after that big brown that got away several times. February 26th – 2004 Today we fished the Chimehuin river in the “hot spot” zone and the activity got even better because the trout seem to like even more the dry flies, but this time we only moved over 300 mts. on the river because the trout seemed to be just there so the fishing was incredible. The place: Chimehuin river in the “hot spot” zone. The fishing: It was amazing, the trout rise all over the river and we got strikes in every attractor or mayfly that we placed in the water, the weights over 2 pounds with incredible fights and it was amazing to see the trout coming from 9 feet in the depth to take a little Royal wulff in the middle of a riffle. By the last minutes of the day the Chilloporters appeared again and some nice browns were fighting as the sun goes down. The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines The flies: As the day before the Royal Wulff had the best results although the Adams Parachute worked well too. The weather: excellent, really comfortable to be in the river for the whole day, this was a perfect day in this magical river that gave us beautiful trout in this amazing February. February 27th – 2004 Today we went to the Chimehuin river with the rafts in the morning, from the town to the Manzano pool and in the afternoon went back to the “hot spot”. We really wanted to do this floating trip again because it seems to have incredible trout. The place: to the Chimehuin river from the town to the Manzano pool and in the afternoon went back to the “hot spot” The fishing: Spectacular again, in the morning every cast that we made from the raft produced a strike, and in every riffle gave us at least 6 or 7 trout fighting in the end of the lines and always with dry flies. By the afternoon we went to the “hot spot” where the activity of the days before repeated with a lot of fights and some that got away. The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines. The flies: any pattern that match the size of the Baetis and massartellopsis. But also the Adams Parachute and the Irresistible worked very well on the fastest waters and in the slow ones a small blue dun did it perfectly. The weather: clear sky in the morning with a nice temperature but in the afternoon a huge storm came and we had to stop fishing for a few minutes but after the storm the trout seemed to be even more hungry so they didn’t stop biting until the last minutes of light. February 28th – 2004 This was the last day of fishing for John and Jay so we went to the worldwide famous “Boca Chimehuin”, with an spectacular dawn. But we also went to the “11 rock” and the bushes in front of the devil’s throat. The place: the worldwide famous “Boca Chimehuin”, the “11 rock” and the bushes in front of the devil’s throat. The fishing: it was very fun because we had some strikes in front of the “tranvia” and in the “sunken log” too. But we had a wild strike in the “11 rock” as soon as the fly touched the water there was an explosion that surprised us but we couldn’t set the hook, then we caught a couple more but with dry flies again… The equipment: 5 and 6 rods with floating lines and for the deep riffles 2 or 3 fast shooting lines. The flies: this time, we had to use some streamers because of the place that we were fishing, we used the classic rabbit and wooly buggers in black and brown. In the “11 rock” we used a giant bitch creek that worked perfectly. In dry flies the Parachute caddis and Parachute Adams. The weather: A beautiful morning that aloud us to see the great “Lanin”, just a few clouds and some wind that started by noon. www.aguasclarasflyfishing.com
