Current Report
Having just returned from a
spectacular five days in
Lithuania, I am left feeling
kind of empty. The lines
needs a good cleaning, flies
sorted out, old tippet throw
away, backpack emptied of
soggy sandwiches you name
it, the list is endless.
I managed to sample four
wonderful streams in
Lithuania. Each running as
clear as gin. The forests
were coming to life, the air
was clean and I was standing
knee deep in cool, clean,
fish heaven water. I almost
cried in joy casting to each
sighted fish.
I enjoy it more when the
fish are testing me.
Sighting fish from a
distance and lengthening the
leader to 12ft+, made the
few hairs on shiny baldhead
stand on end. I was tested
in every way especially on
my presentation skills and
stalking, which were
slightly rusty after a long
winter. Still, I managed to
connect with several fat
browns over 1kg / 2.2lb and
several magnificent grayling
(released immediately with
limited to no playing time
and with sincere care)
topping my 52cm record. I
even took a brookie, which
shocked me into silence.
My Lithuania girlfriend
assured me that fishing was
good. I might add, she isnt
even (being correctly
spoken), a fly fisher-women.
She just commented that she
has, seen little fishes
from many a bridge eating
and making splashes! Sure I
thought. Why do women always
get it right? I tried to
down the moment with stories
of excuses and the ones that
got away with sadness and
watery eyes but she could
see it in my eyes that I had
a bumper week.
Roll on May when I return
for the grand E. Danica
hatch!
Denmark kicked off to a
rather slow start but slowly
gained some ground with
browns rising to a wonderful
hatch of Iron Blues
yesterday evening. Lovely
marked and bright browns
just reaching 15 to 20cms.
It was a pleasure to see
them swim away with hopes of
landing them in future years.
Insect life is blooming
along the streams of Jutland
but with little response.
Few fish can be seen rising
but all are weary and
waiting for something but
not knowing what.
Regardless of the quiet
before the storm the coming
weeks will see a sudden
bloom of life and catches.
The salt is seeing
incredible catches of fat
sea trout being landed all
around the Danish coasts.
Some confirmed reports are
topping 6kg / 13lb. Its
that good. I even managed to
take 2 sea trout over 55cm
this morning after only
being in the water for an
hour. However, I am not sure
if it was the same fish!
Several were seen close to
shore jumping and feeding at
one of my favorite hotspots
at along the Føns peninsula.
The Danish fly fishing fair
went well. The weekend had
seen well-known faces from
all over globe as well as
some unknown ones to
meet under one roof and
share a common interest.
Excellent casting
demonstrations and fly tying
were the main focus but have
these fly fairs lost that
special touch? It seems as
the years pass, these fly
fairs are becoming more and
more packed with tackle
stores bragging cheap gear
and less exhibitions and
demonstrations? Still it was
nice to meet old friends and
meet some new.
Denmarks largest sea trout
competition begins this
weekend with major prizes
including a trip to the
Bahamas for Bonefish. The
first ten prizes are worth
the effort alone to attend.
