Current Report
Fly Fishing in Malleo river The 22th was the first time on the Malleo river. The water was high but not to much, very cold and clear too. A sunny day gave us a beutifull sight of a snowy Lanin that fill us with joy. We started below the bridge of the road to Alumine, fishing well known pools that didn't look so good because of the water level. Very few places presents good chances to fish with dries, but there was a lot of very god runs and pools for sinking lines and streamers. The answer was inmediatly, with good browns and rainbows about 2 pounds. Close to 11 o' clock I saw a few mayflies hatching but not too often. It was the Meridialaris, Baetis and Nousia. The last one is a black leptophlebia with 6 mm. wings that you can imitate with the black gnat in a 18 hook. The trouts, like other days, wasn't interested in the new spring insects. In the afternoon, between 18 and 18,30 , they were hatchs of the same mayflies mainly a Meridialaris, but once again, the trouts didn't show interest on them. Some Caddis, with brown chocolate wings and pale orange-yellow bodies, shown on the beautifull waters of Malleo. Already I had tied in a few of them, because I was looking for those flies days before, so I tied one to my tippet and after a few casts, a foolish brown took it with confidence, like all trout did with Caddis, so the afternoon ends with a 3 pounds trout ,not so bad for the beginning.- Also on the 21th, on the Chimehuin river, I caught a 4 pounds brown with a Massarta nymph on a 14 hook in the same place that I caught the other brown but with a dry fly, I still have a doubt if it's the same trout that "step twice against the same stone" (me).It gave me a fight of 20 minutes that left the hook well bended. More info tomorrow, if the water gets low, the insects hatch and I went fishimg... Tight lines... Benito Perez. Senior Guide of Mendoza Fly Shop
