Current Report
Junín de los Andes 2005 -
2006 season
Patagonia Argentina
November 1st, the trout
season had just started in
Patagonia Argentina, for the
last four seasons Mendoza
Fly Shop is settled in Junin
de los Andes, trout capital
of Argentina.
Spring Creek Lodge, supports
us and with passion and
experience we fish and help
every fisherman to fish the
trout of their dreams in
north Patagonia.
Our arrival to Junín de los
Andes was on November 1st.
the day that the season
started. For our surprise
the rivers are not high as
we expected to be, because
it was a hard winter with a
lot of rain and snow.
Chimehuin river has the same
high of december of 2004 ,
it´s right on it´s course
except for some side
streams.
The water it´s really cold
and the activity begins as
the sun starts to shine and
the temperature of the day
becomes warmer. But we also
had some nice strikes in the
early morning so...
We floated Chimehuin river
from the joint of
Quilquihue river to Balsa
Vieja on Collon Cura river.
The weather was really cold
the first days but to the
end of the season the sun
started to rise the
temperature.
It was a plenty fishing and
we notice that the rainbows
are starting to eat a lot
because of the recent spawn.
The flies that we used were
streamers dries and some
nymphs. We can say that the
Dr. Lecter in it´s original
color, orange body and tail
and hackle olive, was the
the one worked better, in
dries the Chiloporter,
although we didn´t see a
good hatch yet.
In every place that we
fished we saw park rangers
asking for fishing licences
and our guide licences too,
congratulations for this and
keep on working like that.
For the second day of
fishing we choose San Martin
de los Andes, Filo Hua Hum
lake. We caught some
beautiful trout. A cold and
windy day, butnothing
stopped us from fishing,
because of the enthusiasm
and the good company of
Sebastián García and his son
Juan Sebastián.
With Manuel Linares, friend
of Mendoza Fly Shop, we went
to Boca Chimehuin, Malleo
river and Chimehuin river in
different places, the
fishing in all those places
was great, we did´nt want to
come to our lodge, but we
need to rest for the next
day and also to have some
nice dinner...
The second group arrived,
friends from Mendoza that
joined us season after
season in fun fishing trips.
thinking about this, this
year we also have camp sites
by the river, so we can
spend more hours fishing,
having breakfast by the
river and enjoying our
nature. Our first experience
in Patagonia was Chimehuin
river in two steps. Starting
from the Manzano pool, 8 km.
from Junín de los Andes -
Sleeping halfway to the exit
in the "Chivos" island and
in the second day we
continue floating to Balsa
Vieja in Collon Cura.
The group had 6 fisherman
and 4 guides, we had 4 rafts
with 2 fisherman each and a
support raft with all the
luggage for the camp site,
so when we arrived to the
island we had everytihng
ready for the dinner.
After having breakfast in
Spring Creek, we went to
Chimehuin river, to the
Manzano pool,by 10 o´clock
the first raft started it´s
journey, it was a fun day of
good fishing and beautiful
sceneries. By 19:30 the
first raft arrived to the
island, and soon the other
two, some guys keep on
fishing until the night
arrived while the others
enjoyed a nice drink by the
camp site. Once they were
ready, we served a warm soup
and the a delicious dinner
made byArturo Bumscha of
Ruca Hueney restaurant.
After the dinner we had some
nice wines and champagnes to
make a tost for the first 2
day trip with friends of
Mendoza.
We had a nice night with
friends until everybody went
to sleep in our sleeping
bags.
From the guide tent we heard
jokes and laughs coming from
our friends tent but soon
the silence arrived and we
slept with the nice noise of
the water running trough the
stones giving us a nice mix
between our dreams and
memories of the day.
With the light of a new day,
we had breakfast with some
local sweetpies. By 9
o´clock we started again
fishing every littlle corner
of this cristal river. at
14:30 we had lunch by an old
willow tree and also had
some rest of the heat of the
day, and thto rest the hand
that hold the rod and fight
those beautiful and strong
trout.
By 18:00 o´clock we reached
the joint of Chimehuin river
and Alumine river, here is
the place where Collon Cura
river begins. Later, by 8
o´clock we reached the end
of our trip and the van was
waiting to take us back to
Spring Creek Lodge.
Tomorrow we have another
float on Chimehuin river and
an by november 9th we are
going to float Aluminé river
with two days of camping,
later I´m going to tell you
about this...!!!
