Current Report
The average fly fisherman
armed with the knowledge
that salmon and trout prefer
cold, clean water would
probably spin the globe and
stick the pin in Scandinavia
with little hesitation. And
rightly so.
Basically from the far
northern shores of Finland
right down to cute little
Denmark great game-fish can
be had.
Norway and Sweden have
always been top on the lists
but with the ever increasing
expense, especially in
Norway, more and more
anglers are discovering that
Denmark is exceptionally
cheaper and holds the same
thrill and beauty with high
calibre seatrout and
grayling fishing.
Sea trout fishing in salt is
all year round but peak
times begin during March and
run through until early
June. Summer fishing shifts
to evening and early morning
when water temperatures are
at their coolest and the
seatrout move in close to
shore to feed.
The second peak time for
angling seatrout in the salt
begins around the end of
September and continues
until November. Most will
argue that peak times are
all year if you know where
to look for them.
River fishing begins in
March for most water courses
and runs through until
around November. Depending
on the river you have great
chances to tackle world
class gamesters such as: sea
trout, brown trout, grayling
and salmon with even a
chance to pick up the odd
rainbow. Which ever method
you choose: dry fly, wet,
nymph or streamer –
depending on the time of
year, your in for n
exceptional experience.
Crystal clear meandering
rivers, streams and brooks
all offer high class angling
with little or no angling
pressure. Simple.
Christmas lurks just around
the corner and for most it’s
an enjoyable time and
perfect for increasing that
waistline. For others, chaos
and an utter nightmare.
What’s your pleasure?
Nothing can blow away those
cobwebs more effectively
than standing in salt up to
ones “wedding tackle”,
trying to lure that seatrout
into taking a fly you spent
the entire night pondering
over.
I’m not sure what it is that
attracts me into having such
extreme ideas but peace and
quiet would be a safe bet.
Water temperatures are still
acceptable ( for now ), and
great chance to land a rouge
sea run brown trout either
dressed in spawning colours
or in it’s silver “who needs
to spawn anyway” coat.
Burning off those hundreds
of calories and working
through that access alcohol
helps to make the holidays a
little easier, at least for
me. Before you know it, we
fall straight out of 2003
and land, rather roughly at
the entrance to 2004 with
fat bellies, thick heads and
thoughts of the coming
summer holidays and warmer
climates. Please – Not
another turkey sandwich!
Fishing the salt at the
moment has been reasonably
good. Apart from the odd day
of blustery wind,
temperatures – both air and
water – are acceptable.
Plenty of nice seatrout
being taken in the 1kg – 2lb
bracket normally dressed in
sexy spawning colours.
Fjords are becoming the
popular haunt with more
brackish and slightly warmer
water. However, there’s the
odd silver torpedo hunting
at the open coast, finding
that jewel is worth the
effort and a welcome change
to turkey.
That’s pretty much it for
now and 2003. Have a great
Christmas and New Year
celebration and hope to see
you in Denmark next year for
some fine tight lines.
