Current Report
Disappointment. The sea
temperatures have dropped
below 4oC which means, apart
from being cold enough to
shrink a man’s wedding
tackle, the sea trout are
difficult to catch. However,
things took a turn for the
better a couple of weeks ago
when I managed to take a
lovely 65cm – 2.9kg ( 6lb )
pure silver specimen within
5 metres of the shore.
For 2 hours I battled the
cold and painful fingers and
toes to be rewarded near
enough on the last cast with
this fine sea trout.
Snow fell on the country
just after the new year
aided by a wind with a cruel
bite. Even the hardest of
hardest fly anglers may
think twice at spending a
few hours in the salt when
the weather is like this.
Catching anything is greatly
reduced so passion and
determination are a virtue.
Being outdoors is what
counts. The spooky silence
reveals the slightest sound,
the snow covered land
sparkling in the sun, the
blue fingers pulsating with
pain…O, how I love fly
fishing winter.
So, what’s been happening
over here in a land so small
you could of sneezed it!
Fact. There’s plenty if sea
trout being taken regardless
of the weather. Most are
plump and are dressed in
silver winter colours. Any
spawning fish in brown &
golden colours still in the
salt are either lost, or on
their way to a fancy dress
party. Some could be taking
a well deserved rest after
spawning.
The west coast of Fyn has
seen some Steelhead landed
ranging around 1.5kg –
3.3lb, a welcome surprise to
some. One taken near to the
ferry at Wedellsborg Hoved
was a plump 1.9kg – 4.18lb
on Denmark’s most popular
fly called “Juletræ” (
Christmas Tree ), by Steen
Ulnits.
There’s a few other
scattered catches around but
nothing to call a hotspot
just yet. This will all
change in the up and coming
weeks as approach peak
season.
In the next few weeks, most,
if not all sea trout in the
river systems will be
heading back down stream to
the salt to feed and
replenish that lost weight.
There’s nothing much to do
in the rivers, streams and
brooks except turn and head
for the dining areas in the
salt.
