Current Report
G'day
Fished Missouri's Current
River on January 11th with my
son Dan who is home from
college. Thought I'd have a
guides day off but didn't
happen. We had hoped to catch
the early January caddis
hatch but some high water
appeared to be putting it off
that day. The river level was
about 2.3 feet or about a
half a foot below the "too
high to wade" level. A few
were hatching around noon but
not enough to make it worth
trying.
Conditions were great for
streamers. And, Dan needed a
little work with them. Payed
off well. When the Current
get a bit high from rains it
doesn't get muddy brown. it
gets a milky color. Due to
the nature of the area with a
high level of magnessium in
the surface and spring source
formations. When the water
hit the air the pH changes
and tiny magnesium carbonate
crystels form. This makes
dark streamers (we used both
black bear and dark foxxy
clousers)cast tight to the
bank the fly of the day.
As typical with streamer
fishing Dan only hooked up
with about half is takes.
But nearly every spot that
generaly holds a fish held
one for him. Best locations
were areas with a slightly
concaved section of bank. If
there were any exposed tree
roots of a rock it was even
better.
As a good a day as Dan had, I
know mine was better. hard
to bet have a beer with your
son after a day of catching
some very nice brown on
Missouri's Current River.
