Current Report
The North and South Bear Creek in my opinon is one of the best trout water in Iowa. All the guys in my dads family and my grandpa and I had a chance to go and fish it on the 21st throuh the 24th of April. There was a number of caddis comming off through the whole weekend there were size 12 tan caddis and size 18-20 little black caddis and later in the evening of the 21st there was a March Brown Hatch and they where huge flies and that was on South Bear. Friday the 22nd the caddis hatch of the little black caddis was still comming off (went on throughout the weekend and traveled from South to North Bear) and We fished Noth Bear for most of the day we caught our limit on small nymphs like Hare's Ear and Pheasant-tail all Gold Beadhead. Also landed a nice 15 inch Rainbow. They were hitting the top on blue duns and caddis. They were also eating small Griffins Nat and Prince Nymphs. On the 23rd I fished South Bear for 9 hours and I caught fish on Small Copper Johns and Prince Nymphs. We cover almost every hole in the stream and always catch fish. The last day we fished North Bear and caught our fish on prince and later on in the day we had a huge Blue Wing Olive hatch and these were big bugs and we fish those till late in the evening. The whole weekend had fair weather in the 50's and the streams were crystal clear. I caught approximately 40 fish and a couple of nice head shakers. I have fished there for a couple of years and the one thing that I think that you would have your best luck on is nymphs that are small and look natural. But when you get a great hatch than switch because that seems to be the beat action ever.
