Current Report
May 11, 2005 Streamside Orvis/Orvis Michigan Fly Fishing Schools Current Report: Note: STREAMSIDE HAS OPENED ITS NEW LOCATION AT 223 E. FRONT ST. IN DOWNTOWN TRAVERSE CITY. Streamside Orvis and the Orvis Michigan Fly Fishing School (231) 933-9300 info@streamsideorvis.com Orvis Endorsed Lodge and Endorsed Guides TROUT GUIDES ARE AVAILABLE DAILY! Conditions: Manistee and Boardman Rivers: Boardman and Manistee are clear and wadable. Minimal rain Sunday and Monday has left water in good shape. Manistee flies-only water has Hendricksons going regularly with some spinners trying to find warm evenings to fall. We've seen mating swarms with limited falls, but good emergences are having spotty but very good feeding. Water temps are from morning readings in the mid to upper 40's and late afternoons to upper 50's. Black caddis is moving some fish now. Best action is when egg layers come to the water in the evening/late afternoons. Hatches improving daily on all rivers as well. Manistee's "flies only" water Hendrickson emergences (#12-14) #14 spinners, as well as baetis (#18-20) a black caddis (#16-18). Some little black stoneflies on the Boardman as well. Hatches: Tiny black stoneflies are now replaced by Hendricksons as the dominant hatch. Black caddis are also dominating for parts of the day. Fish are choosing caddis over Hendricksons here and there, so if your Hendrickson patterns aren't working, look a little closer on the water for the #16 caddis... There are also some #22 Baetis on cloudy days. This is not the lata species. It's very small and going strong on the cloudy cool days. Keep a look out between 2:00pm and 5:00pm. Cool weather has made spinner falls frustrating. Below Tippy, we may see some black caddis and baetis too. There are some very large fish taking dry flies near the launch and swinging a soft-hackle is a good tactic. Patterns: #12-14 Hendrickson emergers, parachute and thorax males and females are matching the Hendrickson hatch well and fooling a few fish. Spinner pattern of choice is Dennis Potter's River God spinners and Sam Surre's deer hair spinner. Have some Red Quills handy in #12 and #14 too. Hemingway caddis in black #18 is perfect for the black caddis. Elk hair in black #16 or 18 is good too. Hare's ear, pheasant tails (#14 and #16) copper john nymphs (#14) will move fish too. Guides had good days of streamer fishing while waiting for the hatch. Sink tips seemed to be the key difference. Zuddlers #4 in yellow and white best. Brown, black and olive also good. (Hard to beat an olive/black bugger.) Nymphs include copper Johns #16, and #14 in, red and copper. Caddis pupa patterns #16 and #18 in green and #14 and #16 in tan. Some anglers below Tippy are having great action for resident browns on streamers with a partidge soft hackle dropper. Forecast: Temps in the mid to upper 70's falling to upper 60's by weekend. Warmer by Sunday. Isolated thunder storms throughout the week with a mix of sun and clouds. Generally summer-like feel. Check in by phone for the latest. CHECK THE WEATHER BOX ON THE TOP OF OUR WEB PAGE (www.streamsideorvis.com) TO GET TO THE LOCAL WEATHER. Check in directly by phone if coming this week. (231) 933-9300.
