Current Report
Thursday: Another productive
day using dark Hendrickson
duns, soft hackle wet flies
and nymphs in select
locations along the river.
Streamers were also
effective throughout the day
in white, black and yellow
patterns. River flow is down
to around 1000cfs, which is
nearly ideal for wading (600-
900cfs is prime) and this is
a great time to catch the
tail end of the Hendrickson
hatch, so take advantage of
the good conditions. Fish
are still keyed in on them,
and will be until the caddis
come out in force. There was
a good spinner-fall around
3pm and large numbers of
spinners still remain in the
trees, so we should see some
fantastic spinners falls for
the next few days. This
weekend's low pressure and
cooler air should increase
the effectiveness of
streamer fishing, so reports
of large fish in the 16-22
inch range are likely to
come in over the next three
days.
Catch of the Week
A twenty-three-inch brown
trout was landed April 27th
at Sand Hole on a
Hendrickson Dark dryfly.
A twenty-two-inch brown was
taken last night at Gravel
Hole (Campground) on a size
18 Hendrickson spinner.
Special Report
The Housatonic was stocked
Monday the 25th with 9,000
brown trout. Daily catch
totals of 15 to 30+ fish
will not be uncommon
throughout the season. New
natural "run of the river"
flow status will lead to
this year being one of the
best on record because the
dam has been taken out of
commission. For the
fisherman this means more
consistent river flow in
terms of day-to-day
consistency of the cubic
feet
per second (cfs) water flow.
Rain will not have as much
affect as it used to on flow
of water nor will rain have
huge affects on water
clarity. Also, water
temperature will remain
consistent because it will
not be pooling at the damn
and baking in the warm
summer sun.
One-Week Fishing Forecast
Wednesday: Great spinner-
fall! Brown and rainbow
trout ranging from 15 to 22
inches are being landed
from sunrise to sunset on
Hendrickson dries and Duns;
Blue Winged Olives
(size 16) are also very
productive mid-day. There
was no shortage of rising
fish thanks to three
factors: 1. heavy hatches,
2. little to no rain (as was
predicted for today), and 3.
the river was stocked with a
total of 9,000 brown and
rainbow trout (3,000 adults
and 6,000 juveniles).
Thursday and Friday's river
and weather conditions
should lead to some very
productive days on the
water. Wading conditions
will be ideal with the river
hovering around 1100cfs
(cubic feet per second).
Individual fisherman are
already bringing in upwards
of 30 fish before closing
time. In fact, four
fisherman reported landing
between 15 and 30 fish each
from different locations
along the river. Thanks to
natural flow and a great
early season start of
diverse hatches, 2005 may
end up being the best
fishing season on record for
the Housatonic.
Two-Week Fishing Forecast
Newly-stocked trout take
time to acclimate to both
their new surroundings and
their new sources of food.
When the newly stocked fish
begin to recognize bugs as a
primary food source, these
fish will be eager to
clobber new variations of
recognizable patterns. When
this happens, the fishing
will pick up and stay great
thoughout the season.
