Current Report
Fished upper Cattaraugus Creek on July 17, after the big t-storms that hit the area. Suprisingly, they were at somewhat normal levels and at a somewhat normal temp. for this time of year. signs of an early trico hatch were everywhere, but nymphs were the killer. 14-18 copper johns were the pattern to beat. Fished a rt 36 access, and landed 8 fish with an average size of 15: smallest being a 12" rainbow and biggest being a 19" brown. Later tried the CAtt where Elton creek flows into it, and landed 4 nice browns in 45 mins. Highsticking pocket water is the most productive method. i did this with an indicator about 16-18" over my tunghead copper john. The low flows allow the fly to drift right under the indicator, therefore letting you really see what was going on with your fly. This set up worked so good, i was pulling trout out of seemingly barren water. A recommended method for boulder strewn streams. As far as weather was concerned, we had a gentle breeze throughout the day, but by 6:00PM there was a misty dizzle which felt good after the warm day.
