Current Report
Hello All,
This is Joe Ike @
Keystone Angling Heritage
Outfitters, Sorry for not
posting much as for Fishing
Reports or Messages lately.
I have been fairly busy and
water and weather conditions
have been less than ideal
for trout fishing in PA.
this Summer and the
Smallmouth Bass fishing has
also been tough this Summer
in the Juniata and
Susquehanna River System do
to a Bacterial Infection.
Heres my Pennsylvania
Report for the whole month
July and forecast for
August.
Trout fishing has
been recovering recently do
to recent rainstorms. The
Limestone Streams are still
good water levels, crystal
clear, and cold 50s -mid
60s as usual but Extra
Weedy this year do to
Sunny / Hot Weather. Theyre
starting to turn on,
terrestrials, Tricos,
caddis, and midges are here
and fishings picking up,
Hoppers are showing up in
good numbers. The Hybrid
Streams are still a little
low and fairly warm
especially farther away from
tributaries and springs, but
you should expect Tricos,
Terrestrials, Caddis,
Isonychia, Blue quill, White
Flies, and the always-
prevalent BWOs and midges.
As for the Freestone Streams
this Summer has done some
Damage low / warm water and
then Thunderstorms / Heavy
rains, which equal, muddy,
warm water. Some Mountain
Streams or Head Waters of
Freestone Streams should
fish fairly well, mainly
Smaller Natives and Wild
fish and tough conditions.
Expect mostly Caddis,
midges, terrestrials, and
some Mayflies possible on
better, cleaner, colder
waters Mayflies may include
same as above.
My Personnel Trout
fishing this month has only
been 2 Trips, but have been
checking out the Streams and
Listening to what other
fishermens stories/reports
at the shop or while
visiting the streams.
I fished the Little
Juniata River in the
beginning of the Month and
managed 11 trout, 10 Browns
and 1 Rainbow. Water was
very low, stained and Warm
took three different Temps.
At three different times and
areas (72F, 70F, & 68F.) I
caught most on Midge Larvas
#18-24, Hares Ears #20-24,
but also got a couple #12-18
Wet flies & Caddis pupa. One
on dry midge #24 Grizzly and
missed a few on #18 Caddis
Dry.
I also fished Falling
Spring Branch for 2 hours a
few days later water was a
little low, clear, and extra
weedy this summer, Temp.
Cold mid 50s. I fished a
#12 Hopper Dropper Rig with
NO Luck, so I switched to a
tandem nymph rig & leader
with # 22-24 Trico nymphs &
Scuds with Better Luck. I
didnt land any but fished a
Log jam / Willow snag where
I know theres a Big Rainbow
(22-25&Thick) and I hooked
it and 2 other Bows smallest
around 14-16 but tough spot
and not much to back bone to
stop a big fish running into
a tangled mess with
Slow/Soft action 3wt, 7X
tippet, and #22-24 size
flies. Also missed 3 other
fish.
* Please if Trout Fishing
Fight Fish as Quickly as
Possible and Land &Release
Safely. * Thank You.
Lakes and Warmwater
Rivers - Most Lakes in South-
Central PA. Are at good full
levels, clear to slightly
stained, and warm (70s). A
lot of South-Western PA.
Lakes are pretty low, little
more stained, and also
Warm. North-Central Lakes-
are about the same as South-
Central Lakes but been Muddy
after heavy storms do to run-
off problems that have also
effected Northern Freestone
Streams.
I personally have not
done much Trout Fishing the
month of July. I have kept
my eye on the streams and
talked to many of anglers
across the State to keep
informed. I actually am
taking advantage of the hot
weather and warm water to do
some Bass, Sunfish/Panfish,
and Carp fishing from my
Kayak. The main producers
have been #10-#6 Ikes
White/Crystal &
Chartreuse/Yellow Gurglers,
#10-#16Foam Hoppers and
Beetles, #6-#2/0 Ikes Frogs
Blk., Brn., Olive,
Chartreuse, #10 Ikes
Dragonfly nymphs, #4-10
Ikes Crayfish, #6-10
Whitlocks Red Fox Squirrel
Nymphs, #6-#1 Whitlocks
Near-n-nuff Crayfish, and #
10-4/0 Clouser Deep Minnows
Chartreuse, white, orange, &
chartreuse/White.
I have fished 11
different places 9 different
days so far this month. I
have done well on most
outings for most targeted
species. I caught 5 Carp out
of 4 trips, 53 Largemouth
Bass out of 7 trips, 128
Sunfish/Panfish out of 8
Trips, 53 Rock Bass out of 3
Trips, 13 Smallmouth Bass
out of 3 Trips, 17 Fallfish
out of 3 trips, and 3 Perch.
ALL These FISH Were Caught
in South-Central and South-
Western Warm-Water Lakes and
Rivers All on Flies listed
above. The Lakes and Warm-
Water Rivers have been
fishing Very Well, other
than the Smallmouth Bass
Problem this year in some
areas. Its been fun taking
out the Kayak and Paddling
around New Spots searching
for Carp, and exploring new
areas. I have had a lot of
disappointments though cause
I havent found any new Carp
Spots but did find some
great Largemouth Bass and
Sunfish/Panfish spots. I
have caught good numbers
of Slab Bull Gills! and
managed a fair amount of
nice Bucket Mouths about
17 out of 53 Largemouth Bass
14to 18. All Carp Big of
Course 26-32 and 10-20lbs.
Only 1 nice 17 Smallie
though out of 13.
*Have a Fun Summer and
please dont think fishing
seasons over cause the
trout streams are or have
been in bad shape. Our Great
State offers many other
options, to hone your
skills, and maybe open your
eyes to a New Fishery, Sport
or obsession. * Thank
You. Later, Joe Ike
