Current Report
BOSTON HARBOR & CAPE COD- Stripers & Blues Just returned from my annual fly-fishing trip for Atlantic Salmon on the Hawke River in Labrador. Water level was perfect, as was the weather and the fresh run of salmon, covered with sea-lice. Catch and release limits were the rule every day. Mostly 4-6 pound grilse and some salmon to 15 pounds aggressively took hitched glitter Black bear hair green butts size 6, chartreuse-butt buck bugs size 4 and Magog Smelt size 2. On my return, I found both Boston’s inner-harbor and outer-harbor striper fishing much improved. Erwin Brady and friend from Florence, MA annual fly and light-tackle trip to the harbor produced Erwin’s personal-best light- tackle striper. The 38”, 20- pound linesider slammed a Texas-rigged Bassin’ Assassin right beside the boat. Two other keepers in the 30” inch class took chartreuse Half & Halfs on the long rod in Boston’s outer-harbor. On Friday both the JANET B and the B-FAST were after stripers in two different locales-Race Point and Boston Harbor, respectively. Kevin Concannon, from Hingham, MA and EMC, hosted the group trip to the Race jigging for Bass and Blues. Bass to 48” and good numbers of blues took the parachute jigs bounced in the sand on the edge of the drop-off. Meanwhile in Boston, long- time client Deano Romanow of Framingham, MA went to work with Epoxy-head herring patterns cast on 350 grain DepthCharge line. He accounted for about a dozen schoolies and two keepers at 32 and 30 inches from Boston’s inner-harbor before the feeding foray ended. Herring and silversides were the bait in evidence. Dick Cook (Lowell, MA) used the T-3 Trident and Vortex reel effectively to land two keepers using chartreuse Half & Half’s in the early morning on Saturday. Both bass were taken close to the beach on the edge of a bar where the bass were lined up to ambush the baitfish on the running tide. Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters www.bfastcharters.com BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE – Stripers -June 28, 2003 This week excellent top- water action could be found in the inner-harbor bays early in the morning. Some good-size keeper bass and both small and large blues are in the upper reaches of the harbors and bays. Blues this early is atypical in Boston. That said the fishing was relatively slow this week, especially for the numbers of bass. Traveling anglers John Sensenich and friend for Berwyn, PA fished three days on Monday through Wednesday. Monday’s early morning blitz in Hingham bays produced the best numbers of bass for three days. White Slug-gos on 5/0 offset worm hooks brought great surface action and was one of the best lures for the PA anglers. John was high rod for the week landing 6 keepers and his two personal best bass at 35” and 38”, tipping the scales at 18 and 20 pounds. Long time client Ed Ajamian and friend Roy from Skillman, NJ fished the end of the week and found plenty of bass swirling on the surface with lockjaw. 90 degrees temps, no wind and soft tides appeared to be the culprit. Nevertheless, the fish did turn on at the late morning tide change on the outer-harbor flats. Herring patterns and gray and white Half & Halfs worked well on the long rod as did large Bassin’ Assassins on spinning gear. Numerous keeper bass, covered with sea-lice, came over the rails in the short- lived blitz. Saturday’s weather change sparked by the NW wind turned the bass on in the outer harbor flats. Both Andrew Budway and friend John from Medford, MA fishing on the B-FAST and Scott Sullivan and friends from West Hartford, CT fishing on the BAY FLY had multiple keeper trips. Again the numbers of fish is way down but the size of the bass made up for this. By far, surface presented Bassin’ Assassins were most productive followed by large herring imitator patterns on the fly rod. John took a 35”, 18 pound keeper and 3 other on the B-FAST, while the BAY Fly accounted for 5 keepers to 34 inches for Scott Sullivan’s group. Out-of-State anglers have been taking advantage of our association with the Cohasset Harbor Resort, Barker Tavern Restaurant and the Boston Harbor hotel. Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters www.bfastcharters.com BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 9/5/02 Before the past week’s Nor’east winds and seas, the outer harbor was alive with bass and blues feeding on peanut bunker and tinker mackerel. The surface- feeding blitz got started at first light and continued until the tide slackened. The NE winds warranted cancellations mid-week through the Holiday weekend. Dick Hurd (Lexington,MA) of CSFB and client/friend Will experienced the best feeding foray since June on last Tuesday the 27th. Armed with long-rod, the fly fishers cast small bunker patterns fished down with DepthCharge line and small white gurglers and sliders on top with Wonderline. The top-water presentations worked best on a long pause after the strip. The bass exploded on the stationary slider or gurgler, simulating a stunned peanut bunker, more readily than fast moving presentation. The two-inch bait-fish were all over Broad Sound. Small 1/0 Black-back or Chartreuse- back bunker patterns with reflective mylar sides worked best subsurface. Before the tide let go mid- morning, the fly fishers boated double-digit keepers and numerous stripers between 25 and 27 inches. Dick’s 37-inch, 16 pound bass was the best fish of the morning. Today’s trip with Jeff Hamilton and clients from Goldman, Sachs, Boston was off to an early start leaving Rowe’s Wharf at 5:00 am on B-Fast’s BAY FLY. Capt. Tom found the inner- harbor loaded with birds working bait, however very few bass were working the bait. Moving the group to the outer-harbor off Revere, the anglers were into schools of breaking fish feeding once again on peanut bunker. The forecast 20 knot NW winds came up earlier than expected, making fly casting difficult. The bunker patterns worked well however, anglers soon switched to light-spinning gear due to the winds. Blues in the 6 to 8 pound range were on the surface with the bass feeding below. Letting the presentations sink below the blues prior to retrieving hooked up most of the bass in the 24-27 inch size class. Two small keepers 28 and 29-inch size class were released. Capt.
