Current Report
Siletz River - August 23, 04
The drought is over! Strong late-
Summer rain beginning Sunday Aug
22 caused the Siletz and other
surrounding coast streams to swell up
to 8 inches in some locations. River
visibility decreased steadily
throughout the day on Monday and
the Steelhead activity increased. By
noon on Monday thousands of fish
were on the move. It was a day to pick
the head or tailout of a nice run and
wait for the fish to swim by. Fishing
was good to excellent from Moonshine
Park to the town of Siletz. Deeply
drifted wieghted steelhead flies in dark
colors with a touch of flash
material(size 4-6) were the ticket. The
fish were anxious after months of low,
clear water. These chrome steelies
were moving quickly in groups of 2
-10 fish and it seemed that 1 in 20
were agressive biters. Others could be
coaxed into a take with multiple fly
changes and adjustments in depth. We
at Small Stream Outfitters expect the
excellent steelhed fishing to continue
throughout the week and through the
weekend. Anticpate hundreds of fresh
fish and hoards of happy anglers in
the gorge when it opens on Saturday
morning.
Reports of the first Chinook of the
season are beginning to trickle in.
They are being caught on trolled
herring rigs in the lower reaches of
tidewater. With the early rains and
early chinook, Sea-Run Cutts should
appear in catchable numbers
throughout tidewater very shortly. Stay
tuned for weekly updates or contact us
for up to the day reports or to book a
trip.
