Current Report

DESCHUTES RIVER:

Wickiup to Benham Falls:

Closed as of 11/1/2003

Benham Falls to Bend:

The water level is very low. The fishing on this stretch is open all year (check regulations) and should be good on BWO's and drifted nymphs.

Bend to Lake Billy Chinook:

The water level comes up on this stretch of river. The Middle river is spotty. The fish are really scattered in the Lower Bridge area. Drifted nymphs or a dry and a dropper are also effective.

The Lower River from Pelton Dam to North Boundary of the reservation:

Closed!! as of 11/1/2003 for trout along with the reservation side. Closed for Steelhead as of 1/1/ 2004. to the North boundary and open from there to the mouth year around.

"STEELHEAD REPORT"

There are still fresh fish in the system. I was down around the mouth on 12/8. I fished for only 1 1/2 hours and landed a nice 8# native that was bright and in great shape. We've had good reports from the mouth, Maupin, South Junction, and the Trout Ck areas. The water temps are now in the low 40's and fish are hunkered down and resting in the slower water of the tail outs and seams. Swinging A-Leeches and traditionals with a fast sink tip or drifting nymphs under indicators are the best method. Darker colors if the water is off color. Water condtions have been inconsistent with recent rains. The current level at Pelton Dam is 4690 CFS.

FALL RIVER:

The area below the falls is CLOSED!!!! ODFW is still stocking the river with some big brood trout from the hatchery in the campgroud area up to the headwaters. The hatchery up to the head waters has been fair on BWO's, Para adams, flash back p-tails, black copper jons, light bird's nest, zebra midges and black wooly buggers.

CROOKED RIVER:

Fishing has been good on the surface with BWO's, #18 para- adams, and black midges. Bead head orange scuds, zebra's, serindipities, flash back pheasant tails, hare's ear and black and brown buggers are all working below the surface.

METOLIUS RIVER:

The bull trout fishing has been good as of late with reports of fish over the 20 # range being landed. This can be a tough fishery as weather and river condtions can be harsh in the winter. Drifted nymphs and swinging deep with leech or large streamer patterns are effective. This is a total "CATCH AND RELEASE FISHERY". The trout fishing has been fair.

MANN LAKE:

Winter conditions have settled in and the lake is frozen!

ANTELOPE FLAT:

Winter conditions have settled into the area.

DAVIS LAKE:

Winter condtions have moved in.

HOSMER LAKE:

Winter conditions have moved in.

EAST LAKE:CLOSED AS OF 11/1

CRANE PRAIRIE RESERVOIR:CLOSED AS OF 11/1

WICKIUP RESERVOIR:CLOSED AS OF 11/1

BIG LAVA LAKE:CLOSED AS OF 11/1

PAULINA LAKE:CLOSED AS OF 11/1

LITTLE LAVA:CLOSED AS OF 11/1

JOHN DAY RIVER:

The water level is up and down as of late due to recent rains. It was up to 650 cfs last week and has dropped back down to around 350 cfs as of yesterday. The level will vary and rain has moved into the area in the last few days. Fish have moved up from the mouth and there should now be fish in the Clarno area and higher. 80% of the fish will be native as the John Day has no hatchery on it. Water temps, presentation and fishing condtions should be similar to the Deschutes.
