Current Report
Flyfished the upper Rogue near Medford both Friday and Saturday afternoons. Have been gone for a week on a hunting adventure out of state so it was interesting to note the changes that had taken place. The rains of the week before have brought a slug of Coho up along with some fresh adult steelhead. Some of the larger steelhead are pretty sluggish in the cold Rogue water, but the Coho are on fire. I was lucky to hook up with two of them Friday afternoon. I hooked a good one of over 10 pounds. Won't ever know because he put up some kind of fight. I was never able to get the bugger on the reel. First he ran way upstream taking the length of the flyline plus some and then he turned and ran straight back at me. Finally stripping and retrieving line I was able to tighten up only to send the fish on a frightening beeline down stream. There he stopped, trashed the surface, and started a new charge back upstream. A lot more happened, but the details are all now a mental mesh of trying to keep a tight line on the fish and retrieve all that annoying slack. Eventually the hook pulled free. Quite a nice welcome back to the river. The other silver was a smaller fish yet she departed after a couple of spectacular leaps. The steelhead hooked and landed were good fish of over 8 pounds but neither put up a inspired fight. In fact I had to literally "lift" one up off the bottom before any action began. I'll tell you for the first 10 seconds I thought I had a snagged piece of log. The last steelhead hooked and landed Saturday late afternoon was a nice fresh, wild fish of 26" length that showed a lot more animation and spunk. All the fish were hooked on single Carpetbagger nymph variations. Neil Adventure Center www.raftingtours.com/RT
