Current Report
Nov.15, 2006. November
fishing in the Keys is
usually one of the better
months to hunt Permit, and
this year is no exception.
Yesterday, we chased the
wily ones around the
Marquesas and had many shots
at tailing fish in the
morning

Del's Merkin Crab Fly shown
above was developed by the
late Del Brown. It has
caught more Permit than any
other fly. Permit love
crabs and this fly does a
great job of imitating the
crawling crustacean. Permit
also love shrimp and small
baitfish. They will take
Tarpon flies that imitate
baitfish like the
cockroach or the sand-devil
or clouser patterns. They
will also take the gotcha
shrimp patterns as shown
here.

Whatever
fly you select for Permit
fishing, make sure that you
adapt your selection
according
to the depth and color
bottom that you are fishing,
e.g. fast sinking dark fly
for deep, dark bottoms, slow
sinking light color fly for
shallow sandy bottoms, etc.
