Current Report
Key West Fishing Report - June 2006 Hot, humid, and sticky the weather finally looks as if it is going to cooperate. Yes, the low temperatures with 66 degrees at night and northwest winds may have been comfortable for a nice walk in the park but it has not been a walk in the park for Tarpon fishing. The month of May was full of crazy weather. However that is all behind us. This is summer time in Key West. We need that wind out of the South to get the Tarpon to turn on, and turn on they did! The A/C is on high, and if you don't think that's hot... the other day my angler while he was fighting a fish told me that his eye balls were sweating... That's Hot! So the Tarpon bite is in full swing and we are very glad to pass along the good news. Last night we jumped 11 tarpon from about 50 lbs to about 120 lbs in just a couple of hours time. The following night the same. So that should be the norm from here on out. And for you worm freaks, the "worm hatch" started on the 27th and yes, the Tarpon were nuts. Plugs, flies, and soft baits are all getting good results. Just make sure that you and your gear is in top shape because you are in for a pretty good workout. What else is going on? I am still surprised to see a large amount of big cudas on the flats. At this time of the year they usually head for the deeper water. There is a very large number of bait this year sticking around. So I guess it's safe to say that this must be keeping them fat and happy on the flats. Sharks are very plentiful - Lemons, Blacktips, Bulls, and the occasional Hammerhead are around in good numbers and of some pretty good size. Permit and Bones are happening. Keep in mind that we are coming in to our rainy season, but if you experience a quick cloud burst, it is usually short lived and once the visibility returns, you are back in the game. We still have a few dates available towards the end of June and the first 3 weeks in July. So check your calendars and come on down for some great fishing. Capt. Larry Capt.
