Lower Owens, wild trout section

Current Report
Fished the wild trout section of the Lower Owens on 2/27 and 3/1. Fishing was quite good both days, especially when there was any sort of cloud cover. Fished mostly bead-head zebra and tiger midges, size 18-20, with most fish taking the tiger midge, which was the 2nd fly in the rig. Used a long, 6X leader, and kept as much fly line off of the water as possible, as to minimize any drag – also used a #1 split shot about 6 inches up from the first fly. Flows were around 125 cfs, and the fish seemed to be schooled up where the fast moving water slowed down into deeper sections. Decent size mayfly hatch came on Friday around noon, right when some clouds came overhead. A gray-brown mayfly (I used a parachute hares-ear), size 14-16 did the trick on top for a short period of time. Other than that, stuck with the nymph rig for brown trout from 9 to 14 inches. No crowds on Friday, a good crowd on Saturday. Wind blew pretty hard Saturday morning, too – making casting tough and not allowing any sort of hatch while we were there. Always a treat to get up there and spend the weekend on the water w/my dad.
