Current Report
The San Juan has been
fishing GREAT!! The water
has been clearing up as the
weather stabilizes and
begins to get warmer. The
visibility is nearing 3 ½
feet, and the crowds aren’t
bad at all. If you’ve wanted
to fish this fantastic tail
water, but have been scared
of the crowds, now is the
time to fish it. I fished
last Tuesday Feb. 25th with
a group of friends from AZ.
By 10am, we each had over a
dozen fish in the net, with
some pushing 20 inches!! The
weather has been overcast
and this seems to relax the
fish more, and make them
feed more actively.
The best flies lately have
been two patterns I’ve been
working on for the past few
seasons, the Trojan Midge
and the Sparkle Larva. These
patterns have given me 40-
fish days on my past 4
trips!! The Trojan Midge is
a simple, brown midge pupa
pattern and the Sparkle
larva is tied with krystal
flash. The best sizes have
been 22 and 24. Gray and
chocolate foam wing emergers
and San Juan Worms in burnt
orange and brown have also
been fishing well. The water
is flowing around 350cfs and
at a temperature around 47
degrees. This flow has
proved adequate for the bugs
and fish, and the river
seems healthy. The hatches
have been sporadic, with
some blue winged olives on
very overcast days, but the
primary bugs have been
midges.
