Sunshine Coast Fishing Report
May 26/04
This is a very exciting time to be angling on the Sunshine Coast as most lakes whether at sea-level or higher elevations are experiencing different insect hatches on a daily basis. Chironomids are hatching on all the lakes on the coast and the fish are gorging themselves. It will pay to remember that after a fish has filled it's stomach with chironomids it will often wash everything down with a leech or three. So if the fishing slows after a while don't give up! Tie on a leech and keep catching (and releasing) them. Besides these tiny insects almost every lake is having a hatch of mayflies. Be sure to have different sizes and stages of them in your flybox.
The lower lakes are having the most diverse hatches as the water temperature is somewhat warmer than the higher elevation bodies of water.
Paq (or lillies) lake is still very productive right now. It has extremely good access as it is located right on the highway. The fact that you may be able to hear the occasional vehicle passing by is quickly forgotten as soon as you hook into one of these beautiful cutthroat trout. This is the Sunshine Coast's only "trophy lake" (single fly, catch and release only). Chironomids are extremely abundant on this lake right now. The pupal stage fished below a float has been productive, as well as the emerging stage and adults on the surface. Mayfly hatches are occurring quite often with damsels, dragons and caddisflies emerging as well but in fewer numbers. Early mornings and the last couple of hours before dark have been best. The rain has been keeping the temperature of the water cool but this will not last for much longer.
