Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of May 27, 2004 Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report Full Contact Fishing Show is back again, a few weeks back the season opener with host Toddy Million, STS Guiding and Marc Crawford coach of the Vancouver Canucks was shown on Global TV. This weeks show is another Fraser River Expedition with Ex Toronto Maple Leaf and Vancouver Canuck tough guy Tiger Williams. We will be fishing the Fraser for both sturgeon and salmon. Catch the show this Sunday on Global TV at 3 PM Chinook Salmon The Fraser River has been steadily rising since last Friday. Visibility was good right through the weekend but by Monday we were down to less than 6 inches. The Fraser has stopped rising so we should start to see improvement in clarity by Thursday or Friday. Salmon fishing was very good late last week but slowed once the water started to rise and color. The weekend was busy with many boaters and anglers out on the water. Although catch rates were down a bit we should see some good catches once the water begins to clear. Most anglers on the Fraser are targeting the early summer run of Chinook Salmon. These fish are aggressive and will readily take a well-presented lure. The two most popular methods are bar fishing with Spin n Glos and casting spoons and spinners at creek mouths. If you would like to learn more about fishing these methods please see http://www.guidebc.com/article s/chinookfishingonfraser.asp http://www.guidebc.com/article s/earlychinookfishing.asp Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing was fair to good this past week, our guests from Clinton, LA managed to hook into several nice fish over 4 feet. Sturgeon fishing usually starts to slow a bit right after the Oolichon run is over. You can still catch fish on most outings but the bite is a bit more difficult, fish are not feeding as aggressively so having a bit more patience is important. Once the salmon runs are in full swing sturgeon fishing will pick up. Usually by early to mid August we are hooking the big boys quite steadily. Take advantage of our mid week September Special 10 % discount for early bird bookings September is a great time to fish for both salmon and sturgeon. For those of you looking to hook into one of those trophy sturgeons, September is a great month. We still have some great dates available. Take advantage of our early bird 10% discount for weekday bookings for the month of September. Already the salmon are starting to enter the Fraser, before too long we will be hooking into those chrome beauties on a daily basis. Peak Chinook fishing on the Fraser is between mid June and mid July. We still have plenty of good dates available so dont wait until its too late. For those of you who like to fish for sockeye August is primetime. Although we are getting quite full we do still have some morning and afternoon start times. I would suggest booking ASAP so not to be disappointed As most of you probably know, October and November are two of the most spectacular months for salmon, sturgeon, fly fishing and wildlife viewing. Although this is our busiest time for bookings, we still have some excellent dates available. If your wanting to experience some of the best sport fishing British Columbia has to offer, dont miss out on this falls salmon and sturgeon fishing opportunities. Trout Trout fishing was good for the most part this past week. Again, many of the larger lakes were fishing well for small to medium sized trout. Our best lure this past week had to be the Gibbs Sterling Silver Ultra Lure. This lure imitates an injured fish so any species that feed on other fish will aggressively attack the Ultra Lure. Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Lake Trout, all species of salmon and steelhead have been caught on these lures. The key to success is controlling the lure speed, Ultra Lures are best retrieved at a slow to medium retrieve rate, retrieving too fast is often the difference between catching or not. Interior Lakes Fly Fishing Lake fishing was excellent for the most part this past long weekend. Hub Sports reports good to excellent fishing on most of the interior lakes. Roche Lake fished well with red and black leech patterns catching lots of fish for those who like to troll a fly. Anglers who prefer to anchor and cast did well on red chronomids, bloodworms and silver chronomids. Most of the lakes on Hwy 5A between Princeton and Merritt have been producing good results. Reports have it that one lucky angler at Courtney Lake hooked and landed one of the largest rainbows seen in many years in that area. A trout measuring 32inches weighing approximately 16-18 lbs is a trophy of a lifetime. Steelhead The Vedder River is fly only from the Vedder Crossing down stream and closed to all fishing above Vedder Crossing. Only a few more days until the Vedder is closed to all fishing. The Vedder will re-open July 1 for Chinook salmon fishing. The Chehalis River is now closed until June 1st when it re-opens for summer run steelhead and Chinook salmon. I would suggest called the guys down at Hub Sports before heading out, they have up to the hour reports on local river conditions. You can reach Hubs at 604-859- 8316 or drop by at 34917 Essendene Ave in Abbotsford. Remember to conserve your catch Tight Lines and we will see you on the water Vic Carrao www.guidebc.com sts@guidebc.com 604- 671-FISH ( 3474)
