Sunshine Coast Fishing
Report July 14/04
Most of the lakes in the Pender Harbour area of the coast are getting a little warm right now. The bigger lakes are still giving up fish if you get your flies down deep. Garden Bay and Mixal lakes are worth a look, if you are using a fast sinking line and are trolling with leeches or your favourite minnow pattern. Some hatches are still taking places but, not many.
Sakinaw and Ruby Lakes can give you a few fish. It is recommended that you try fishing very early in the morning or just before dark. The fish have been more willing to take your offering at this time of the day. There also tends to be quite a bit of traffic on these lakes in midday. You can still get into fish at high noon, just try to hide in some of the bays where the people on watercraft that are not fishing have no desire to be.
One of the best bets on the Sunshine Coast right now is to get some elevation. Two lakes that deserve a look are Richardson and Harris. Good reports have been coming in from these two bodies of water. Both lakes are quite high in altitude and the insect are hatching daily. Your fly box should contain at least some dry flies like Tom Thumbs, Humpies and Royal Coachman. You should also be sure to have nymphs such as damsels, dragons some spratleys can never hurt and a few micro leeches.
Trout Tales has been doing a great number of flyfishing lessons right now. Why not come out and see for yourself how easy it is to learn to cast a fly? Don't just dream about it, do it. This is perfect weather!
