Current Report
River Report & Fishing Conditions - DAILY - Friday April 01, 2005 1. River Traffic 2(a). Water Conditions/Fishing Conditions 2(b). Boat Launch Conditions - McKinnon Flats 3. River Flow Rate (m3/s) 4. Water Temperature 5. Weather 6. River Etiquette** 7. Today's Quote 1. River Traffic Where folks were fishing today: Glenmore to Policeman's Flats: 40% 22X to Policeman's Flats: 20% Policeman's Flats to McKinnon Flats: 40% 2(a). Water Conditions/Fishing Conditions Pol/McK: Very windy. Used streamers all day. Bow River Bugger. Good results. Caught 1/2 dozen each. Both rainbows & browns. Water crystal clear at the start, but clouded up throughout the day. Likely silt from runoff from the bluffs. THANKS TO DAVID SANDWITH. 2(b)Boat Launch Conditions - McKinnon Flats The ice shelf still covers the entire width of the boat launch, and then some. However, the band is getting narrower as the ice rots and melts. It has receeded both from the parking lot side, as well as from the river side. It is now about 12 paces deep. And, in the middle, it now drops off about 3.5 feet. At the downstream side of the launch, directly in front of the small posts, it has collapsed to within a foot or so of the river bottom. It is here that a very small number of folks have been dragging up their canoes, pontoon boats and aluminum boats. Unless you own one of these types of water crafts, you probably still would not want to try to take out here. Depends on how you feel about the bottom of your boat! There are now several feet of dry river bottom gravel between the ice shelf and the water. 3. River Flow Rate (m3/s) Noon today: 60.23 cms Historical average this date: 50 cms approx http://www3.gov.ab.ca/env/wat er/regions/prairie/bowriv.htm l http://www3.gov.ab.ca/env/wat er/ws/data/hydro/tables/BOW- RBOWCALG-WL.txt http://www3.gov.ab.ca/env/wat er/ws/data/hydro/figures/_RBO WCALG.gif 4. Water Temperature Bow River below Carseland Dam: Noon today: not available The water above the Weir should be somewhat cooler. 5. Weather Today: High today: 15°C Wind: 17 km/h Max Wind Speed: 56 km/h Tomorrow, Saturday: A few clouds, high 8 The strong wind is expected to die down Friday night, and in behind a cold front, there will be cooler air for Saturday. Temperatures will be 5 to 8 degrees cooler Saturday compared to Friday. Milder weather returns Sunday, with double digit high temperatures. The temperature continues its ups and downs into the first part of the week. cfcn.ca Five Day Forecast: http://weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca /forecast/city_e.html?yyc 6. River Etiquette** In general, keep in mind that fly fishermen, like other outdoor people, value the peace, quiet and solitude their sport offers. Allow others as much space as possible based on the situation. If you see someone fishing a pool and there is no one else in sight, keep looking for an unoccupied stretch of water to give the other angler his space. 7. Today's Quote "Listen to the sound of the river and you will get a trout." - Irish Proverb I am pleased to provide this "Daily Report" as an exclusive service to my regular customers. Outdoor writer Bob Scammell has this to say about my reports in his column "Keeping tabs on Bow easier than ever" in the Calgary Herald September 30, 2004: "Is the fall fishing the best in years, or does it just seem that good after the poor fishing in the spring and summer that never arrived? It has become much easier to keep tabs on the Bow through the daily or weekly e-mail reports of Michelle Magotiaux of Bow River Shuttles (michelle@bowrivershuttles.co m). The excellent daily production gives interesting and useful information on the day before on the lower Bow, including flow rates, water clarity and temperature, floating weed conditions and short-term weather predictions. There is also a calculation by percentage of where the angling pressure was the day before on various sections of the river. Recently, a feature has been reports from anglers on how they did on the river the day before." Kindest regards, Michelle Magotiaux htpp://www.bowrivershuttles.c om
