Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of April 15, 2005 Congratulations to Jim Matthias of Chilliwack, winner of the Hubs Sports Draw for a 6-hour sturgeon trip for 2. The winner of the Fish Cat 9 is Greg Gorecki Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report Salmon The Fraser River is near it’s 2005 opening for salmon fishing. May 1st is the opening date for retention of Chinook salmon. You can keep 1 fish over 50cm and 3 under for a total of 4 salmon per day. (Please check regulations for changes). The most productive method to target these fish is bar fishing on the main stem Fraser or trolling or casting lures at creek mouths and tributaries. We have written several articles over the years that you will find helpful if you wish to try these great fisheries. We also offer instructional- guided fishing trips for locals who want to learn the Fraser’s hot spots and guided trips for visiting anglers who just want to spend the day on the water. Chinook fishing on the Fraser http://www.guidebc.com/article s/chinookfishingonfraser.asp Early Chinook fishing http://www.guidebc.com/article s/earlychinookfishing.asp A day on the Fraser http://www.guidebc.com/article s/dayonfraser.asp Notice by Sport fishing INSTITUTE of British Columbia The 2005 Fraser River fishing season starts May 1st and anglers can once again expect great salmon fishing. With all the public controversy over sockeye returns in 2004, many anglers could mistakenly think that recreational fishing will be limited this summer” said Sport fishing Institute of BC director Brent McCallum. “But 2005 looks like it’s shaping up to be another great year for sport fishing, “ he added. According to Fisheries and Ocean Canada (DFO) 2005 Salmon season overviews, Chinook returns to the Fraser are expected to be solid. Fraser River Pink returns are expected to be abundant in 2005, and Fraser River sockeye is anticipated to be strong based on largely on summer run returns to Quesnel and Chilko River. While DFO will manage recreational fisheries to protect weaker stocks of concern, anglers can expect predictable fishing opportunities much like those experienced in 2004. Ongoing salmon conservation measures are paying dividends and ocean survival is improving said SFI member Roger Dornan. “ Recreational anglers can look ahead to another great year pf predictable fishing opportunities and generous bag limits. The SFI is a registered, not for profit association representing the provinces recreational fishing industry. The SFI works with governments, industry and stakeholder groups to protect fish stocks and ensure sustainable and predictable fishing opportunities. Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing has really picked up over the past week. The Eulichons have arrived into the river, although in small numbers, the test fishery did get a few good sets. Having some inside contacts, we did manage to pick up enough fresh Eulachon to keep our rods busy this past week. For those of you who are booked to fish with us this weekend and next week, don’t worry; we still have a good supply of fresh bait. You can expect sturgeon fishing to continue to improve from now until late May. If you’re looking for a great experience and would like to try some sturgeon fishing, we have boats in the water ready to go. If you’re planning on visiting the Vancouver area in April or May, we are now booking for spring Sturgeon charters. You can book your own boat or join others who have already done so and are looking for anglers to join them. Check out our new " shared guide trips" section on our website. If you are planning on fishing with us in October / November for our best sturgeon fishing action, don’t wait too long to book, we are already filling dates. Sturgeon Seminar – seats are going fast, we still have a few left for our sturgeon seminar on May 7 or 8th. Just call or e-mail us for more info. Trout Trout fishing is starting to pick up although the cold spell this week didn’t help much. Anglers are reporting fair to good fishing on Stave Lake, Pitt Lake, Harrison Lake (North end) and some of the local lakes Fraser Valley area. Reports of fair fishing in the Interior and Kamloops area with Stump Lake, Paul Lake and Dragon Lake all producing fish. We are now booking fly fishing charters for spring Cutthroat fishing on several local Lakes. The salmon fry will be starting to hatch in the next few weeks so book now for prime dates. Fly Casting Lessons - FLY CASTING SEMINAR PLUS 6 HR GUIDED TRIP This seminar is custom designed for the novice to intermediate, first time fly fishers welcome. Two 2hr fly- casting lessons held on dry land, you will learn how easy Fly-casting really is. We have Sold Out the first seminar and now offering a second for May 14,21,29, sign up on –line or call us. Vedder River Steelhead The Vedder River was in excellent shape this morning. Water clarity was very good, levels were perfect. We fly fished most of the morning hooking up with one fish on an egg suck’n leech pattern. Yesterday the water was colored so it’s pretty much day by day now that we have unstable weather patterns. There is still some very good fishing opportunities for Steelhead on the Vedder, keeping an eye on conditions will be a challenge. If you are looking for a last minute up to date report, Best to call Roger, Rob or Daryl down at Hubs for a current report 604-859-8316. Harrison River Same as last week Water conditions look good, a few fish being reported by fly anglers but overall fishing has been poor. Most of these fish are in Harrison Lake and should begin migration into the river in mid to late spring following the salmon fry. Until then, this river will offer some fair to good opportunity for trout and the odd steelhead moving into the Chehalis River. This September we are expecting millions of Pink Salmon to return to both the Harrison & Fraser River. Peak fishing is from Sept 7 to 21. If your looking for some incredible action on both fly and spoon, this is a great fishery to experience. Although September is a long way away, our regular clients know how fast we sell out. If you want to experience this great fishery, give us a call to reserve your dates. Chehalis River Haven’t had a report yet this week. The rain shouldn’t have much effect, as freezing levels are fairly low. The canyon and lower canyon area did produce some nice fish last week so can’t see why it would produce some fish this weekend. With clear water conditions, using lighter tackle will usually result in more hook ups. Cured roe, small wool ties or my favorite, single Jensen eggs all work well this time of year. This summer is looking to be a good one, best dates for early salmon fishing opportunities is from June 15 to July 7 and again July 21 to August 20, book now for best dates. Remember to conserve your catch Tight Lines and we will see you on the water Vic Carrao www.guidebc.com sts@guidebc.com 604- 671-FISH ( 3474)
