Fraser Valley report for the week of March 22, 2006 I must apologize for the outdated fishing report, been so busy with the shows its been difficult trying to keep up to the workload. Now that spring has officially arrived I will do my best to keep this report updated each and every week. Vancouver Ocean Fishing Howe Sound Fishing Report Most anglers fishing out of Vancouver are targeting winter feeders and some early Fraser Chinook. Recently catches of legal size Chinook have increased with fewer shakers. Local anglers are reporting that most of these legal fish are coming from depths of 80 feet plus or trolling your gear as close to the bottom as possible. A wide variety of lures and bait will to produce Chinook Salmon. Anchovies and Herring strip both produce fish but many of the local guides prefer using hootchies (Purple Haze, dark green/white, Army truck, blue/green/white and spoons (Gypsy.....Flamin' Hans, Flamin' Finney, Army Truck and Gibbs Coyote green/glow) Interior Stillwater Fly- Fishing Interior Trout fishing has been touted for many years as some of the best Rainbow fishing in the world. Thousands of lakes to choose from with a variety of angling experiences. We have chosen some of the best angling waters in the interior and will be offering guided day trips from May 1 to June 31 and Sept 15 to October 15. Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report The Fraser River is low and clear. We just drove from back from Edmonton through Jasper where we followed the Fraser from its beginning. The water levels are extremely low all the way through, especially here in the lower mainland due to low tides. Looks like there is a fair amount of snow pack to come down but it wont be for a while yet as temperatures are still quite cold in that area. Local weather patterns are about to change, its looks like the rain is coming our way for the next 7-10 days. The weekend shouldnt be too bad, only calling for 40% and light winds but the rest of this week is 70% with light winds out of the SE. I think the rain is well needed in our local rivers so look at the bright side; fishing will improve for both steelhead, trout and sturgeon. Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing the last few days has been extremely slow. The tides this past week have been terrible for fishing the lower river. The incoming tides have been small with extremely low tides. It looks this will begin to change by Friday with some 14.1 & 14.3 highs but it might not help too much as these highs will be late in the night. You might want to get out real early to catch the end of the incoming or maybe wait until mid next week when daytime tides begin to improve. Anglers are still reporting fair catches but they are working much harder for their fish than a few weeks ago. Our guest from the UK fished 7 of the last 10 days and managed to hook into 9 fish. Not great but not bad either. Local steelhead anglers are welcoming the expected rains. The extra water should really help move some fresh fish in and get those fish that are in the river moving and more active. This would be a great time to fish with spinner and spoons and even try some fly- fishing in the lower river. I know there have been some local fly anglers doing very well in the canal area. The Chehalis Water levels are extremely low in the Chehalis. If we get heavy rains as expected, this river will really turn on, this would be my choice for the weekend if water levels jump up a couple feet or more. Remember, continue using light leaders and small presentations even if the water rises several feet unless water clarity is poor, then increase your offering to the next size and maybe trying adding some scent. Harrison River We fished the Harrison just before heading to Edmonton and didnt see much happening. No fish rising, not fish hooked and water levels were very low. I stopped by the Bay yesterday to check for rising Cutties but didnt see anything. Some Pink Salmon fry were swimming close to shore and we did see a few winter stoneflies crawling out of their shells but no fish feeding. Soon the hatchery will release this years salmon fry down the Harrison, this usually brings in a few trout. Watch along the north shore near Kilby, they are usually jumping and popping out of the water in front of the park and by the train bridge. Winter Fly-fishing for Trout Spring Trout fishing is just about here. Some hatches are beginning to occur and salmon fry will soon be abundant in many of our local waters. Some of the larger lakes like Pitt and Harrison Lake will start to fish well as will some of the smaller tribs. We just purchased 3 new Fish Cat Streamer XL pontoon boats for fishing some of the smaller waters and still waters in the interior. We offer several remote river-fishing adventures where you often dont see another angler all day. The winter fishery is very good for trout, early spring you can fish trout & steelhead.
