Fly Cast Seminar May 6, 13 & 20 - Seats Available Vancouver Ocean Fishing Howe Sound Fishing Report Ocean fishing near Vancouver has been pretty much typical for April. Anglers are now moving from winter fishing grounds to more common summer fishing area’s like Tungstal Bay, South End of Bowen, Thrasher rock and fishing the mouth of the Capilano River. As long as we don’t have strong SE winds, fishing these areas should remain good. Anglers are reporting some keeper size Chinook in the 12 to 20 lb range with strong numbers of under size. A wide variety of lures and bait will to produce Chinook Salmon. Anchovies and Herring strip both produce fish but many of the local guides prefer using; hootchies (Purple Haze, dark green/white, Army truck, blue/green/white and spoons (Gypsy.....Flamin' Hans, Flamin' Finney, Army Truck and Gibbs Coyote green/glow) Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report The warm couple days we had on the weekend is now starting to affect the lower mainland area. The Fraser did a small jump on May 21 – 23 then settled again, it now looks we will see another small increase in water levels over the next few days. Lots of small debris in the river so keep an eye out if your running a jet. Tides this week are not that great, we have a early morning high around 9 to 9:45 for the weekend with a hard outflow for most of the day with an late afternoon incoming. Best to get out early morning or late afternoon. Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing has improved greatly over the past week. We are now catching sturgeon that have an enlarged stomach full with Eulichans ( smelt). We caught some real fatties this week with our largest fish measuring just under 8ft. We hooked lots of nice quality fish between 4 to 6 feet providing our guests with some great action. Finally we are starting to see some of those days where fishing is red hot, we had one boat land 26 fish and a few double and triple headers. We still have some boats available for this weekend and next week if your wanting to get out on the water. Give us a call toll free to book your next fishing adventure 1-866-771- 3474 Come join us for a great day on the water and learn all about the tagging we do for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. If your looking for some spring fishing opportunities, we offer some excellent sturgeon fishing, spring trout fishing on the Fraser, Harrison & Pitt, steelhead fishing on the Vedder and Chehalis Rivers and several remote rivers for trout and steelhead. We also offer saltwater fishing out of Vancouver. For more information call us toll free 1-866-771-3474 or e- mail us @ sts@guidebc.com Vedder River The Vedder River has risen slightly this past week but is still quite fishable. Only a few more days left before the upper river is closed to fishing and the lower river becomes Fly Only. If this weather stays cool we should see some good fly fishing opportunities for early May. If your wanting to try your luck for steelhead on the fly, we have several experienced fly guides that can show you the ropes. For the month of May we will be offering some special rates for walk & wade fly fishing trips. Please e-mail or call us for details. The Chehalis The Chehalis has been fairly good this past week. We have had some good reports on the canyon with some nice hatchery fish being taken. The Chehalis is running low so you will need to use light leaders in the 6 to 8 lb range with smaller presentations. I would suggest trying the Drenan floats which are clear and less visible during low water conditions. I would also suggest switching your pencil lead over to split shot. Fishing first light and late evening is also helpful during these types of conditions. Harrison River Reality check The mysterious Harrison River cutthroat are becoming more of a legend or myth than reality. I’ve been out enough times this past winter and spring to come to the conclusion that these fish are just not there in numbers like in the past. Whether it’s due to poor weather conditions, lack of feed or just low numbers, I’m not sure. But I do know that fishing on the Harrison has been poor this past year. I really look forward to the fall salmon season when I can then again rely on this river to produce some great fishing. For those of you like me who love trout fishing, don’t worry, interior lakes open May 1st. Spring Fly-fishing for Trout Some of the larger lakes like Pitt and Harrison Lake will start to fish well as will some of the smaller tribs. We just purchased 3 new Fish Cat Streamer XL pontoon boats for fishing some of the smaller waters and still waters in the interior. We are already planning our interior Stillwater fly-fishing trips for the months of May and June. We are offering Stillwater fly fishing and instructional fly fishing lessons. Please call or e- mail us for details. Venture River Boat update For those of you who follow our website you have probably noticed the updates for Venture River Boats. I will try to keep the pages up to date with current stock and any news or specials. I will be working in the store 2 days a week but available to answer your questions anytime via e-mail or phone. If I’m slow to answer, I am probably on the water. Remember to conserve your catch Tight Lines and we will see you on the water Vic Carrao www.guidebc.com sts@guidebc.com 604- 671-FISH ( 3474)
