Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of May 10, 2006 A peak at this summer’s fishing opportunities - update June 1 to July 31 From all early indications this summer’s salmon fishery is shaping up to be a good one. Early season test fisheries are already showing good numbers of Chinook Salmon in the river. These early fish are best targeted by Bar fishing or plunking spin n glo’s out of the boat. Best fishing is between mid June to late July. Good numbers of fish between 12 to 25 lbs are caught on a regular basis. August 1 - 21 Sockeye pre–season estimates are 17.4 million for the 2006 summer salmon fishing season. Early runs are expected to hit the river by early July with a late July opening. Best fishing should be between August 1 to 21. This is a great family fishery that offers lots of action and some great table fare. August 21 – Sept 10 Last year this time period offered some of our best Bar fishing/plunking for late run red Chinook. We were averaging 5 to 10 fish per day with a few 20 fish days catching King Salmon between 14 to 30 lbs. Our largest landed fish was 42lbs. Vancouver Ocean Fishing Howe Sound Fishing Report Good numbers of fish are now starting to move towards the Fraser River. Some good reports coming from Vancouver Harbour, confluence of the Fraser and south end of Bowen Island. We should start seeing larger numbers of keepers over the next few weeks. A wide variety of lures and bait will to produce Chinook Salmon. Anchovies and Herring strip both produce fish but many of the local guides prefer using; hootchies (Purple Haze, dark green/white, Army truck, blue/green/white and spoons (Gypsy.....Flamin' Hans, Flamin' Finney, Army Truck and Gibbs Coyote green/glow) Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report The Fraser is in good shape as I write this report. Water temperatures were at 46 to 48 degree’s yesterday which is a bit cool for mid May, visibility is 4 to 5 inches. I don’t expect much to change over the next week so this would be a good time to hit the river for either Chinook or Sturgeon. It seems as though the Eulichans ( smelt ) run or lack of, is getting some attention in the media lately. From my daily observation there are some Eulichans in the river and have been for several weeks. We have caught good numbers of sturgeon that are stuffed full and some that are even spitting them out. The past few days we have seen quite a few seals moving up river towards Hatzic and Dewdney. Quite a few birds around as well. Good possibility the Smelts are up in that area. Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing continues to be very good this past week. Most of our trips were averaging 8 to 12 fish per boat with some real quality fish being landed. Average size is a bit smaller that in the Fall but overall the fishing has been Excellent. Good number of fish are being caught between 3 to 5 feet with some larger fish. Best bait has been Eulichans but we have also done well with salmon roe. If you don’t have Eulichans try using surf smelt, they are not quite a good but they do work. Hubs Sports in Abbotsford carries them in stock. If your looking to get out over the next few days or this weekend, we still have a few boats available. Come join us for a great day on the water and learn all about the tagging we do for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. Vedder River The Vedder River is in good shape as I write this report. I haven’t had too many reports on anglers success but I do know that the river is fishable. For those of you wanting to try your luck at steelhead on the fly, this would be the week. Water levels are still reasonable and clarity is good. First hot spell and this fishery will be over for the season. Best method would be swinging wet fly’s with HiD fly lines. Try fishing some of the tailouts on larger runs like Way’s Field, Bolder Run, Gun Barrel and of course Lickman and Bergman rd area. The Chehalis The Chehalis has been fairly good this past week. We have had some good reports on the canyon with some nice hatchery fish being taken. The Chehalis is running low so you will need to use light leaders in the 6 to 8 lb range with smaller presentations. I would suggest trying the Drenan floats which are clear and less visible during low water conditions. I would also suggest switching your pencil lead over to split shot. Fishing first light and late evening is also helpful during these types of conditions. Harrison River Water levels on the Harrison have risen substantially over the past week. Harrison Bay now has enough water that you might be able to find a few Cutthroat roaming the shoreline. The east shoreline usually produces some nice fish this time of year. Also try fishing the Train Bridge and below to the confluence. practice catch & release, it’s more fun letting them go. Spring Fly-fishing for Trout Some of the larger lakes like Pitt and Harrison Lake are really starting to turn on We have had some good reports of Cutthroat thrashing on salmon fry on both of these lakes. Try fishing the shoreline and look for actively feeding fish. When trout are feeding on fry, they usually show themselves by splashing and thrashing on the surface. Interior Lakes Interior Lake fishing is just getting started. Most of the more popular lakes opened a week ago on May 1. Reports so far are mixed which is not expected for May fishing. So far we are experiencing what I would call a cold spring. Most of the reports from anglers suggest slower than usual fishing but some bright spots on the lower elevation lakes. Leighton and Tunkwa are fishing well as is Roche, Corbett, Kentucky and Bluey. Kump Lake has had a few good reports as has a few of the lakes along Kane Valley Rd. We just purchased 3 new Fish Cat Streamer XL pontoon boats for fishing some of the smaller waters and still waters in the interior. We are already planning our interior Stillwater fly- fishing trips for the months of May and June. We are offering Stillwater fly fishing and instructional fly fishing lessons. Please call or e-mail us for details. Venture River Boat update For those of you who follow our website you have probably noticed the updates for Venture River Boats.
