Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of May 26, 2006 A peak at this summer’s fishing opportunities - update June 1 to July 31 From all early indications this summer’s salmon fishery is shaping up to be a good one. Early season test fisheries are already showing good numbers of Chinook Salmon in the river. These early fish are best targeted by Bar fishing or plunking spin n glo’s out of the boat. Best fishing is between mid June to late July. Good numbers of fish between 12 to 25 lbs are caught on a regular basis. August 1 - 21 Sockeye pre–season estimates are 17.4 million for the 2006 summer salmon fishing season. Early runs are expected to hit the river by early July with a late July opening. Best fishing should be between August 1 to 21. This is a great family fishery that offers lots of action and some great table fare. August 21 – Sept 10 Last year this time period offered some of our best Bar fishing/plunking for late run red Chinook. We were averaging 5 to 10 fish per day with a few 20 fish days catching King Salmon between 14 to 30 lbs. Our largest landed fish was 42lbs. Vancouver Ocean Fishing Howe Sound Fishing Report Now that the Fraser is high, it is a good time to try fishing the ocean near the mouth of the Fraser. Many local anglers are trolling between the north and south arm. Anglers are also reporting fair fishing near the mouth of the Capilano river and south side of Bowen Island. A wide variety of lures and bait will to produce Chinook Salmon. Anchovies and Herring strip both produce fish but many of the local guides prefer using; hootchies (Purple Haze, dark green/white, Army truck, blue/green/white and spoons (Gypsy.....Flamin' Hans, Flamin' Finney, Army Truck and Gibbs Coyote green/glow) Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report The Fraser River is now into full freshet. Freshet is when this past winters snow melts and begins to fill our rivers full of water. The past few days the river has risen from 3 to 4.5 meters in Mission, that is almost 5 feet for us who still convert in feet and inches. On Wednesday the river reached the highest point of last year’s freshet so it’s looks as though we might get a bit more water than last year. This is all good news as the sooner the freshet peaks, the sooner we can begin salmon fishing. We should be back on the Fraser in full swing by early to mid June. Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing has slowed considerably due to high water. It’s difficult right now to find a place to anchor and there is lots of debris coming down the river. This is the time of year when we start fishing area’s that normally don’t have enough water to hold sturgeon. Back channels, flood plains, tributary sloughs are all good places to try. Using a variety of baits will help find fish that are hungry. Try using Eulichans, worms, eels and roll mop. Salmon Good numbers of Salmon are now migrating up the Fraser River. You can try some of the creek mouths casting spoons or spinners or you can give the river another couples weeks to settle down then start bar fishing for Chinook. In the meantime we are fishing local and the interior lakes for rainbow trout and having some great success. If you would like to spend a day on the water fly fishing for trout, give us a call toll free at 1-866- 771-3474 If you choose to fish the Fraser, the best method c=during high water is casting spoons like the Gibbs Kit-A Mat in a #45 or 55 or the Gibbs Croc or Koho lures which are available at most tackle stores. For trolling the Sumas Canal area, try the Gibbs Tee Spoon or Gibbs Croc, they both are proven winners for the Fraser Valley area. If you’re looking to get out on the water we have some great alternatives for fly- fishing for trout on local waters and interior fly- fishing adventures. Come join us for a great day on the water and learn all about the tagging we do for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. Vedder River The Vedder River is completely blown out. This will be the end of the steelhead season on the Vedder for the 2006 season. The Vedder will be closed for the month of June and re- open for July 1st for Chinook Salmon retention. The Chehalis The Chehalis is rising quickly and will be also done for this year’s winter steelhead. This river does get a small summer run of steelhead and will be worth fishing once the water levels get under control. You will probably need to wait until July before that happens. Harrison River Water levels on the Harrison are up and still rising. Water clarity is good and should remain that way through freshet. Although there are not a lot of fish in the Harrison, you might find a few trout in some of the backwaters near the lake and along the east shoreline. Try using minnow patterns if you’re a fly fisher, float and worm and spinners also work well. Be sure to check your regulations for limits and gear restrictions before heading out. Spring Fly-fishing for Trout Some of the larger lakes like Pitt and Harrison Lake are really starting to turn on We have had some good reports of Cutthroat thrashing on salmon fry on both of these lakes. Try fishing the shoreline and look for actively feeding fish. When trout are feeding on fry, they usually show themselves by splashing and thrashing on the surface. Interior Lakes Interior Lake fishing has improved substantially over the past week. We just got back from a road trip and had some good success using chronomids, nymphs and dry fly’s. Black chronies with small glass bead worked well as did my favorite, the bead headed pheasant tail. Also hooked a couple nice 3 lber’s on the dry fly. We just purchased 3 new Fish Cat Streamer XL pontoon boats for fishing some of the smaller waters and still waters in the interior. We are already planning our interior Stillwater fly- fishing trips for the months of May and June. We are offering Stillwater fly- fishing and instructional fly-fishing lessons. Please call or e-mail us for details. We are also renting Pontoon boats if you would like to try it yourself. Venture River Boat update For those of you who follow our website you have probably noticed the updates for Venture River Boats. Our inventory is moving out the door quickly but we have new stock arriving weekly. The Lund Jon boats are flying out the door as this is a very popular model for fly fishers. We have a few 10, 12 & 14 footers in stock. Come check out our new Customweld 20ft Cobra extra wide, this boat has more room than most 22 foot jet boats. Looking for a test drive, give Vic a call. 1- 866-771-3474 Remember to conserve your catch Tight Lines and we will see you on the water Vic Carrao www.guidebc.com sts@guidebc.com 604- 671-FISH ( 3474)
