Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of June 15, 2006 Weekly update Salmon Good numbers of Salmon are now migrating up the Fraser River. This past week we saw a few Chinook Salmon caught at the confluence of the Sumas Canal by anglers trolling spoons and spinners. There were also a few fish caught near the Harrison confluence by anglers plunking spin n glos. Water clarity is still poor on the main Fraser and will probably remain that way for at least another couple weeks. Best bet is to target salmon at creek mouths or larger tributary confluences. If you choose to fish the Fraser, the best method during high water is casting spoons like the Gibbs Kit-A Mat in a #45 or 55 or the Gibbs Croc or Koho lures which are available at most tackle stores. For trolling the Sumas Canal area, try the Gibbs Tee Spoon or Gibbs Croc, they both are proven winners for the Fraser Valley area. If you’re looking to get out on the water we have some great alternatives for fly- fishing for trout on local waters and interior fly- fishing adventures. Come join us for a great day on the water and learn all about the tagging we do for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society. Spring Fly-fishing for Trout Fly fishing for sea-run trout has been fantastic this past week. Lots of fish in the 2 – 4 lb range with the odd fish over 5 lbs. This is peak time for fly fishing sea-run trout so now’s the time to book if you want to experience this great fishery. We are offering daily trips from now until mid July. Take advantage of this great fishery. Interior Lakes Interior Lake fishing has been good to great this past week. Lots of good size trout in the 14 to 20 inch range with some excellent Dry Fly action. The lakes along Hwy 24 are really starting to produce some quality fish. Rumors have it that Sheridan is really starting to turn on with some of those large fish over 10 lbs being caught. Roche, Tunkwa, Leighton, Logan are all producing good results as are most of the lakes in the Merritt/Kamloops area. This weekend looks good for interior fly fishing, Sunday looks best for day trips. A peak at this summer/fall fishing opportunities - update . Trout fly fishing The months of June & July we are offering some excellent fly fishing opportunities for Rainbow Trout and Sea- run Bull Trout. The interior of BC is only 2 hours from our door step with hundreds of lakes to choose from. Local rivers offer some incredible angling opportunities for sea-run Bull trout of up to 10 lbs. This is truly a fly fishermans dream with no crowds, great scenery and a good chance at seeing some wildlife like bears, deer, elk and the odd cougar. August 1 - 21 Sockeye pre–season estimates are 17.4 million for the 2006 summer salmon fishing season. Early runs are expected to hit the river by early July with a late July opening. Best fishing should be between August 1 to 21. This is a great family fishery that offers lots of action and some great table fare. August 21 – Sept 10 Last year this time period offered some of our best Bar fishing/plunking for late run red Chinook. We were averaging 5 to 10 fish per day with a few 20 fish days catching King Salmon between 14 to 30 lbs. Our largest landed fish was 42lbs. September 10 to Sept 31 Sturgeon, sturgeon and more sturgeon. By early September we are into our best sturgeon fishing of the season. This is when our largest fish of the year are caught and average catch rates rise substantially. This incredible sturgeon fishing will continue on through October & November with great fishing opportunities right through until late November. Call and ask us about our September Sturgeon Specials. October 1 to Nov 31 October is one of our favorite months of the year to fish. There are millions of salmon in our local rivers willing and ready to take the fly or grab onto a spoon or spinner. The Fraser Valley area has one of the largest salmon migrations in the world not to mention the annual Bald Eagle migration that arrives in mid October. Rivers are full of fish, tree’s are alive with bald Eagles, how much better can it get. Well believe it or not, it does get better. If you’re after a trophy sturgeon, October is the best month of the year. Last year there was a sturgeon caught right outside our front door measuring over 11 ft in length.
