Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of July 26, 2006 Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report 17.4 Million Sockeye Salmon expected to peak on or around August 9 The Fraser River has been fishing very well this past week. Good numbers of Chinook salmon are being caught by anglers bar fishing or plunking spin n glo’s. Water clarity is extremely good for this time of year, water temperatures are a bit on the high side for late July. This year’s predicted 17.4 million sockeye is expected to reach the lower Fraser on or around August 9. This will make for some incredible salmon fishing through until the end of August. Dates are already limited; we are now booking ½ day afternoon trips for dates that are full. Book Now! Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing has been pretty slow this past week but to be fair to those anglers putting in the time, we have really been focusing more on salmon than sturgeon. Most days we are targeting salmon in the morning with a few hours of sturgeon fishing late in the day. Although we haven’t had any real big numbers we have caught some large fish this past week. As more salmon move into the river, fresh salmon baits become critical to success. If you can get your hands on fresh eggs, hearts and salmon guts you will be much more likely to hook into those larger fish. As more sockeye move into the river, sturgeon fishing will greatly improve. My guess is by mid to late August we should see some great fishing. Salmon Chinook fishing has been steady this past week. Some days are better than others but overall we have been averaging 2 – 4 hook ups per boat with some days up to 7 or 8. Our largest fish this week was 34lbs, best day was 6 in the boat average size was just over 20 lbs. We have seen quite a few fish over 20 lbs and a few over 30. We had one on that was pushing 40 but unfortunately we didn’t get it in. Bar fishing or plunking with Spin n glo’s has been the best method. Green & red cap chrome has produced best results, we also hooked a few fish on red cap black scale mylar wings. Off setting your center hole on the spin n glo’s can create some extra action and often out fishes stock lures. I like to re-drill my lures with a slight off set. Next time your out, give it a try, you might be surprised on how well it works. 17.4 million sockeye are predicted for this August with peak of the run expected to hit the Fraser on or around August 9th. Although we can only guess as to when the river will be open for retention, my crystal ball is saying somewhere near Friday August 4. Vedder River The Vedder River is in great shape, water clarity is excellent, water levels are moderate and dropping. A few Chinook are being taken out of the Kieth Wilson hole as well as the Tamahi and Alison Pools. A few sockeye being reported but remember they are to be released unharmed. Over the next few weeks more sockeye will enter the river and will provide some good sport fishing but again this is all catch & release. If you want to catch & keep sockeye, your best bet is to watch for Fraser River openings. Harrison River Harrison River continues to drop at a very alarming rate. I’m not sure if I have seen it drop so fast in previous years. Not much happening on the Harrison yet but I would imagine a few sockeye will start to show up over the next few weeks. If your wanting to target salmon on the Harrison it won’t really get going until mid September. We are now booking for September / October fly fishing and spin fishing for salmon on both the Harrison and Fraser. Harrison Bay Store is open 7 days a week and is now selling fishing licenses and tackle. They have a pretty good selection of tackle if you fish the Chehalis or Fraser River and local lakes. Summer salmon and trout Fly- fishing Fly-fishing for sea-run trout has been fair to good this past week, water levels are down and clarity it good. A few Chinook starting to show up as well as the odd early sockeye. Over the next few weeks fly fishing for salmon will greatly improve. Sockeye as well as Chinook Salmon will be available from Mid July through until mid to late August. There is also good trout fishing opportunities throughout the same time period. We are currently offering daily charters onto some of BC’s best fly waters, come join us this summer for some great fly fishing opportunities. A peak at this summer/fall fishing opportunities - update August 1 - 21 Sockeye pre–season estimates are 17.4 million for the 2006 summer salmon fishing season. Early runs are expected to hit the river by early July with a late July opening. Best fishing should be between August 1 to 21. This is a great family fishery that offers lots of action and some great table fare. August 21 – Sept 10 Last year this time period offered some of our best Bar fishing/plunking for late run red Chinook. We were averaging 5 to 10 fish per day with a few 20 fish days catching King Salmon between 14 to 30 lbs. Our largest landed fish was 42lbs. September 10 to Sept 31 Sturgeon, sturgeon and more sturgeon. By early September we are into our best sturgeon fishing of the season. This is when our largest fish of the year are caught and average catch rates rise substantially. This incredible sturgeon fishing will continue on through October & November with great fishing opportunities right through until late November. Call and ask us about our September Sturgeon Specials. October 1 to Nov 31 October is one of our favorite months of the year to fish. There are millions of salmon in our local rivers willing and ready to take the fly or grab onto a spoon or spinner. The Fraser Valley area has one of the largest salmon migrations in the world not to mention the annual Bald Eagle migration that arrives in mid October. Rivers are full of fish; trees are alive with bald Eagles, how much better can it get. Well believe it or not, it does get better. If you’re after a trophy sturgeon, October is the best month of the year. Last year there was a sturgeon caught right outside our front door measuring over 11 ft in length.
