Current Report
Fraser Valley report for the week of Sept 27, 2006 Weekly update Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report The Fraser River is in great shape, water temperature has been between 56-58 Degrees, and clarity is approximately to 3 – 4 feet. Lots of fresh salmon moving up the Fraser right now, most fish are heading up to the Vedder River and Harrison River. Each high tide we are seeing large schools of Chum and Chinook splashing and thrashing as they work there way up the river. This is just the start of the Fall Salmon fishing in the Fraser Valley. Between now and mid November, the Valley offers some of the best salmon and sturgeon fishing. Good time to get out on the water. There is now a new fishing boundary in effect, views it by clicking this link, NEW FISHING BOUNDARY. This means that all anglers fishing for salmon after Sept 7, must fish below this boundary. Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing has been good to excellent this past week. Our largest fish landed was just over 8ft, lots of fish between 4- 7 feet. Best baits have been salmon eggs, eels and strips of salmon bellies. The Fraser is fishing well and a few fish are beginning to enter the Harrison. Sturgeon fishing will only improve over the next few weeks; soon the Harrison will start to turn on as will the lower Fraser River below Mission. Best baits for fall fishing is salmon parts, salmon eggs and other natural baits that would be found in our local waters. October is one of the best months for sturgeon. Book now for prime dates and best fishing opportunities. Salmon We have been seeing lots of fresh Chinook and Chum at the confluence of the Vedder/Sumas and Harrison River. The Sumas canal has been producing some nice Coho and Chinook as well as the odd Chum. High tide we are watching large schools entering through the shallows near the confluence. The Harrison has a steady flow of Chum moving up the river with good numbers of Chinook and the odd Coho mixed in. Bar fishing on the Fraser has been spotty at best this past week, most fish are getting by without taking the spin n glo’s. Mountain Bar has fished best; Queens has produced some nice fish as well. Vedder River The Vedder River low and clear but good numbers of Coho, Chum and Chinook are starting to move in. Most of these fish are entering the lower canal at high tide and holding in deeper water until dark. Once night falls, these fish are moving up the Vedder at a fast pace. Best bet is to be at your favorite pool at first light. I would suggest trying some small single egg patterns, roe clusters or even rolled muddlers for you fly anglers. With this clear water, scale down your leader strength to 6 or 8 lb test and wool or bait offering to finger nail size. Harrison River Harrison River is really starting to turn on. Lots of sockeye up in the Morris creek area getting ready to move up Morris Canal on the first rainfall. Good numbers of Chum, Chinook and the odd Coho moving up the river. Over the next week we will really see this river transform into a great fly fishery. Right now while water is still low, be sure to use small fly’s and light leader. For those of you who don’t fly fish, try casting small lures like the Gibbs Ultra Lure in a 3/16. They work great on the Fraser, Vedder and Harrison. Not only does the Harrison River offer incredible fall salmon fishing, it also offers some of the best sturgeon fishing anywhere in the valley. We are now filling up the last few available dates for October, give us a call to book your next guided fishing adventure. Fall salmon and trout Fly- fishing Fly-fishing for salmon and trout has been excellent this past week. Lots of fish moving up the Fraser heading for their home waters. If your looking for some good angling opportunities on the fly, give us a call, we offer local and remote fly fishing opportunities from Vancouver to Merritt. A peak at this summer/fall fishing opportunities - update September 10 to Sept 31 Sturgeon, sturgeon and more sturgeon. By early September we are into our best sturgeon fishing of the season. This is when our largest fish of the year are caught and average catch rates rise substantially. This incredible sturgeon fishing will continue on through October & November with great fishing opportunities right through until late November. Call and ask us about our September Sturgeon Specials. October 1 to Nov 31 October is one of our favorite months of the year to fish. There are millions of salmon in our local rivers willing and ready to take the fly or grab onto a spoon or spinner. The Fraser Valley area has one of the largest salmon migrations in the world not to mention the annual Bald Eagle migration that arrives in mid October. Rivers are full of fish; trees are alive with bald Eagles, how much better can it get. Well believe it or not, it does get better. If you’re after a trophy sturgeon, October is the best month of the year. Last year there was a sturgeon caught right outside our front door measuring over 11 ft in length.
