Current Report
Was in the Bassett area on Thursday, March 4th checking on my cabin and took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to wet a line in the Smith River. Went up near the dam which has been good to me lately and observed a few good old boys sitting on five gallon buckets at most of the "stock truck holes". I inquired as to how they were doing and most responded that they were just killing time until the state stocked again, which they hoped would be very soon. I found a spot to enter the water and promptly missed a good fish. I then proceeded for a long ways before running into a pod of brown trout which produced five fish in just about as many casts. It was then absolutely nothing until I arrived at a good "get out point" about 300 yards further up the stream. I moved about a mile up the river to within sight of the dam and found a pool with lots of dimples that indicated feeding fish. I cast to the dimples with an Allieworm backed up with a brassie hung about six inches below the Allieworm. This combination produced one brown and 3 rainbows in quick succession before the action came to an abrupt halt. Because my goal is to always catch ten fish in any outing, and I was one short, I stubbornly continued to fish for about another hour without as much as another tiny bite. Can't really complain. It was another great day on my favorite river.
