Fall fishing in the Texas Hill Country

Current Report
Fall provides some of the best fishing opportunities in central Texas. As the water temperatures drop the warm water fish will become much more active. Flows are about average on most rivers for this time of year. The llano River is one of my favorites this time of year. The combination of low and clear water makes fishing dry flies for Guadalupe Bass very successful. Grasshopper patterns and popping bugs will produce savage strikes. Going with a larger fly will reduce the number of strikes but will sometimes temp the larger Guadalupes and some really big largemouth bass. Because the Llano's streambed is publicly owned for over 100 miles there is plenty of water to keep anyone busy for the rest of the season. Obtain a good road map and go to any of the many crossings on the river between Junction and Llano. Most crossings will provide walk in access to the river. For those that have some type of watercraft the San Marcos and Colorado Rivers are both great options this time of year. Both of these rivers hold some really large bass. Topwater flies will work but most of the larger fish will be caught below the surface. Crawfish patterns and weighted wooly buggers in tan, black and brown will entice the bass as well as quite a few catfish. It is not uncommon to catch several 3 to 5 pound catfish as well as largemouth and Guadalupe bass while floating either of these rivers.
