Current Report
Active surface feeding through the Darby / Hamilton area and into the middle river at present, our post run-off emergence finally commencing in earnest after after weeks of weak and discontinuous teasing by mother nature. Localized and dense concentrations of Green Drakes - perhaps the best in many years - flurries of PMD's and Bitterroot Stones have been reported as have Grey Drakes and the first of the Golden Stones. Darby gage hoovering 1250 cfs range this week with streamflow now in a slowing and comfortable post run-off regime. This last 20% drop in streamflow yielding a full 50% increase in fishiable water to floaters. Foot fishing opportunities are still quite limited but now insight. Behind the shop we are nearly bank-full, with visibility to the bottom in all areas and side channels having good holding water. Currently raining lightly with drying and warming through the weekend forecast.

Catch of the Week

Special Report
What to expect for summer? The possibility of a very dry August is built into the Northern Rockies weather. A very quick and low 'high water', that is peak run-off, now well behind us. An outstanding post run-off fishery with sustained surface fishing deep into July is the way it looks at present. Predictions are excedingly difficult but we are in essentially the same shape as we were at this time last year - this week we received several more soaking rainfalls - and it worked out fine. We had a cool summer, and another is forecast , the right amount of moisture at the right time and outstanding emergence through the season. The one fact is that the upper Bitterrroot River is to a strong degree protected by having 60-90 days flow behind Painted Rocks Dam stored for fisheries use. Local drought summaries released last week have the Biterroot Valley and adjacent forest now at normal. Painted Rocks Lake at present is full. Stay tuned.
