Current Report
The Blue is good option during winter. Flows have moderated and fishing is good below Dillon Dam. Low flows below Green Mountain mean better oppportunities to walk in to the canyon but be prepared for the cold.

Catch of the Week
Some of the bigger rainbows that stay near the dam have dropped down. 4lb Pure Cutthroat landed below the drop dam.

Special Report
Rocky Mountain Tailwater Update: Blue River: Have you ever wondered why those crazy guys in downtown Silverthorne are standing knee deep in the Blue River in the middle of the winter? Not to mention the fact that cars are zooming by on the interstate above and hordes of shoppers are bustling about the factory outlet stores along the riverfront below. What makes the anglers want to put up with all the apparent distractions? Big Rainbows! Yes, the chance of landing a ten- pound plus trophy bow out of this tail water is what makes your local fly fisherman loose his marbles. The Blue's shrimp fed monster rainbows are a challenge for any angler. These behemoths beneath Interstate 70 don't just jump in your waders. You must first locate your quarry in this river. Way too much time is lost covering unproductive water. Nymph the Blue for success with a 12ft leader and 5 x tippets. Spot a fish then work on this fish patiently. Incrementally work from behind the trout being careful not to line the fish or bean him with split shot. Watch the movements the trout makes as it feeds. Try to pick up on any feeding rhythm and cast accordingly. Pay particular attention to the mouth of your target because you usually will not have the luxury of seeing your indicator move. These old- timers hit and spit too quickly to detect most of the time. Mirage flora- carbon tippet provides the chance to get the wiser fish on your fly by allowing your tippet to sink immediately for drifts in the hit zone. The tippet is also almost invisible to your prospective quarry. Fly Fishing Outfitters (800) 595-8090 in Beaver Creek, Colorado is located about 40 minutes west of the Blue River. Our store can offer you directions and the right flies for your trip. The river receives less pressure and tends to fish best during the winter season. Large fish often come out of their deep lairs to seek romance in the winter months and your chances of success with big fish on the pre- spawn bite are better than any other time of year. Good luck on your next trip to the Blue! Mysis relicta a.k.a. Mysis shrimp live deep in Dillon Reservoir and are drawn through the outtake tube at the bottom of the lake. The Blue's Mysis section flows through downtown Silverthorne and a myriad of factory outlet stores. You could be landing a ten pound rainbow while your family is shopping within casting distance. Black and Red midges also inhabit these tail waters.
